Could be an specific selected part. I don't recognise that number format; RCA's normal whole number system began with a 4

Maybe someone else can shed more light.

The "RCA Transistor Manual" 1967 edition confirms what Craig said, it only has RCA parts starting with 40xxx and the usual 1N, 2N etc, could it be a custom coded part for an equipment manufacturer?

I think you might need to try looking in late 1970's early '80's RCA databooks.

You also need to add RCA in front of the number as despite the regular 40xx, 2N style numbers everybody remembers, they did many others including 'Bxx' prefixes.

Here is a section of a full page ad from Practical Television January 1985 listing them for sale.

Re RCA 16957 transistor, the 1969 data book supports the 40xxx guidance offered by "Factory". A clue about application could be that RCA tended to use TO3 packaging mainly for domestic type applications such as audio and TV time bases. I would suspect that it is an OEM spec number.

RCA also shows TO-3 types for various industrial applications in the databook I have. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything on the 16957.

I've got several RCA T03 trannys with a 16 prefix, EG 16182 & 16799 for instance as well as a few 40409's & 40251''s, been trying to ID them for years. Thing is we all probably have a few drawers of obsolete NOS trannies but most of which can be subbed for modern parts. That said with the recent shortage of parts, now might be the time to list them on Ebay.

Quite common to use "special" numbers for specific customers. Grundig thyristors were all "in house" numbers. Fairly certain they were RCA.
That advert from Television. Was it "Sendz" components? I THINK he is still tading, I purchased an audio chip for a flat screen TV from him just a few years ago. If he is, he may still have them. Nearly all his stuff stuff came from UK manufacturers, presumably their overstock. He knew the basic data (ie, these are BD243) and I had loads off him. Never a failure.

No - P. V. TUBES 104 ABBEY STREET, ACCRINGTON LANCS

No RCA transistors listed in the SENDZ ad of that edition, but, it might be short a few pages.

40409 would be a 90V 0,7A 3W NPN audio transistor in a TO-5 or TO-39 case. 40251 is a 50V 15A 117W 0.5MHz audio or switching transistor in a TO-3 case.

Both according to my ECA vrt volume 2 edition 2004 (should get a new set one of these days).

Unfortuntely not. ECA 2004 mentions some 16xxx types but not this one. My only RCA databook from 1977 doesn't mention it either.

Not in the 1994 D.A.T.A Digest Transistor databook either.

Relaying from a Dutch forum: Anyone ever encountered an RCA 21270? Google has 1 entry that suggests it was used as an audio output in an organ, which makes sense as it is a TO-3 type. Other markings are 274 where RCA is normally stamped and VHU7416440 where the date code is normally stamped. RCA isn't stamped on the transistor but on the box.

Hi Les.

That's interesting to know. I used to buy loads of components, panels, TV spares etc from them when I was in the repair business. I assumed Sendz closed down around the time of TELEVISION magazine's demise.

When I was buying stuff from them they were at 63 Bishopsteignton, Shoeburyness, Essex.

Just had a search and appears the business is in London Road, Southend, Essex but can't seem to see a website or phone number. I wonder if they advertise or just rely on local custom. Maybe other members have dealt with them recently?

Regards,
Symon

Symon, it is a few years (perhaps 5 or 6) and he had a young chap looking after his"computering" side. I may have used the old TV mag phone number, but whatever I ended up with this young chap. I told him I knew David quite well, and did a fair bit of business with him through the '80s. Not sure if he gave me a different number, or just passed mine onto him. Anyway we had a bit f a chat, and he supplied me the audio chip I needed.
I have the old phone number on the tip of my tongue, but not quite certain. Starts 01702, and a 992 in there as well was it 330992?? Probably not..

This is listed as current in 2021 at the London Road address.

In order to confuse the number harvesters, it is written in reverse so start at the right hand side of the number -281979 11770- (0771.............)

Found a reference at least to it here ...

From the June 1987 Television magazine, searching for 'RCA16957'
