A wee correction: I have two qualifying sets, a TV22 Mk2 whose serial number is the one recorded on the spreadsheet as belonging to a 62, and a TV62 whose serial number is... something else.

OK Paul. I'll be going through all the later posts in due course when errors like this will be put right.

Complementing John's detailed description, you don't even have to open the back cover to look inside as the TV22A's cover is quite different from that of all other TV22s - it features the bowler hat thing and also the text 'Type TV22A', as shown in the photo below (from eBay, and a set actually restored by Panrock several years ago)

Perhaps another question to ask would be how many forum members do not own a TV22. Many years ago when I first spotted mine looking lost and forlorn at Audiojumble it just seemed to be the next must-have exhibit for my collection and because it sported the quirky TC184 Band III converter it just oozed TV history. With hindsight I should have realised that because of its Band III converter the set hadn’t been pensioned off in the mid 50’s but had endured a long service life until the tube expired. So after a full and thorough restoration I have a set that can just about be viewed on the darkest of nights. While diagnosing the problem I connected the TV22 chassis to the CRT and scan coils of a 14 inch Pye PTV that was awaiting restoration and got a decent picture which taught me the importance of achieving “first light” before proceeding too far with the restoration. It also spurred me on to restore the PTV and shelve the TV22 until a suitable tube turns up.
The other lesson I learned for the future was to ignore all those who tell you to remove the pitch over the EHT winding. That pitch may be a moisture trap but it also provides mechanical strength. Without it the EHT winding can move on its former fracturing the wire at the start of the winding. Mike Barker made an excellent job of rewinding it replacing the Paxolin former, laminations, etc. in fact everything except the cardboard box I sent it in was new. Anyway, in answer to the original question it’s a late MkII with a PL81 Line Output valve, the B9A socket being fitted into a metal adapter ring riveted over the octal sized hole. Len

It looks like Edd China has got an example of one upstairs in his workshop, as seen in one of his latest videos (if it's not, it's a similar model), seen at the back on the left hand side up on a shelf. On the far right it looks like an old scope of some sort. Scroll through to around 31.50 for the start of the 'Ask Edd' slot to see the TV - link below:-

Looks like a TV62 on the left. The scope looks a bit like an HP 180. The Y amp looks like 1805A and the timebase an 1820C.

I thought it was a TV62, hence quoting Andy's previous post where he mentions one and shows a picture of it, although he's labelled his picture TV32, I guess by mistake.
I've got an HP 180 scope, but mine is the 'upright' version, so didn't recognise it. |

One TV22 MkI here to be added. S/N 83/36581. Restored and working but with an intermittent loss of line o/p that I haven't got to the bottom of. Probably down to the LOPT.

Thank you, all.
We're still waiting for anybody to own up to having a TV22A. Yet there are 8 on the poll bar chart! Steve |

Only just spotted your poll so added my TV22 Mk1 (albeit with TV24 RF/IF deck grafted in by a PO). It worked happily for about 10 hours at our open village event in June. Found a nice dark corner for it and it generated a lot of interest with vintage clips downloaded from Youtube. Driven from a PC using Modelines and ex-Rediffusion modulator cards.

Just to add another TV62, S/N 216/01189. The set is fully working, and has had a replacement cabinet, as the original had a big crack in the top. I also still have the old cabinet! Got the set in 2004 from the NVCF when it was at the NEC!

I wonder what sales of the 'A' were like, could it be that by the time it was released 9" was starting to seem rather small? Bit like anything under 32" these days!

Have just added my TV22 MkII s/n 124/11499. Restored a couple of years back.
Working well with a Hedghog and Bush Freeview box.

Here are the results so far, with updated table attached. Model Type first, then Quantity. The 'poll' figures are added in brackets, for comparison.
It is clear the TV22 Mk I is the most common type remaining. It would be interesting to know about any other examples that may be at the Dulwich Museum. TV12A ...4 TV12AM ...2 TV12B ...6 TVF12A ...1 Total all TV12: ...13 {poll = 10} Total TV22 Mk I ...20 {poll = 27) Total TV22 Mk II ...16 {poll = 20} TV22 (not decl.) ...3 TV22A ...1 {poll = 8} TV22U ...1 Total all TV22: ...41 Total TV32 ...3 Total TV62 ...11 Steve |

If you want to add notes to my TV22 83/13859, I would say it's in "good unrestored condition".
Looks like it's been dry stored, getting it working will be a future project.
