Re: Peerless K040 Mids in Nightingale NM-1’s
That’s so very kind of you sounds just the job.
Would you be able to let me know how much the carriage to Essex would be? I might have to get a divorce before I’m even married to my partner though, when she finds out there’s possibility of even more speakers in the house! |

If you are referring to the Dave Smith who lives in Hornchurch, then I say take his offer, before he changes his mind!
I am glad to hear Dave is still in business. Last time I used him, he did a great job. He has all manner of rare tools and people send him drivers from all over the globe to refurb. You are lucky to live near him! |

Re: Peerless K040 Mids in Nightingale NM-1’s
Re taking off the old surrounds they should just peel off the cone but you'll need a sharp screwdriver or old chisel to get the surround off the metal can. I stuck my surrounds onto the can first and made two rings out of round cable that sat on top then used a gurt big heavy weight to weight em down. I then applied glue to the inside bit and weighted these with tins of beans or similar.
Andy.

Re: Peerless K040 Mids in Nightingale NM-1’s
I support the advice offered in Post #5. Having enlarged your photos, I would think they are well capable of withstanding repair. Why not try it first? The PVA and tissue can do no harm and I suspect it will be almost impossible to hear any difference given the frequencies these operate at.

Re: Peerless K040 Mids in Nightingale NM-1’s
Different people have different views. I chose not to try with glues, PVA and tissue paper because I knew it would only have to come off later and I didn't want the increased risk to the cone when shaving off the old surround.
My patience was adequate and I listened to other things in the meantime. Those K040MRFs are essentially irreplaceable. There are speakers around using them, but there are also people with damaged units out looking for them. If you are going to have someone else re-ring your drivers, they may not thank you for glopping them up with different glues etc, and may decide to refuse the job. Remember that these surrounds are not nice PVA-compatible paper but are a shiny-surfaced plastic foam. David

Re: Peerless K040 Mids in Nightingale NM-1’s
It's a meticulous, but not difficult task. Like Andy, I don't shim - just get everything nice and level and proceed with care. IIRC those Peerless mids have very 'soft' spiders and, once I had glued the new surround to the cone and the outer settled into the basket rim, the driver just kind of 'came to life' - even before I glued it. They are very good, and sought after drivers.

Re: Peerless K040 Mids in Nightingale NM-1’s
Hi all, Sorry I haven’t replied yet, I have been at hospital all day as my Dad had a bad fall.
Thanks as usual for all your great advice. Having had a few hours waiting around I have decided the drivers deserve Dave’s expertise and will hopefully get time tomorrow to give him a call to confirm the job. I am now just trying to work out between the two Netherlands firms which are the best foams. Thank you all so much for your time spent helping me with my dilemma. Sorry I am so indecisive! Colin. |

And just possibly Dave either can recommend or supply the best surrounds?

Re: Peerless K040 Mids in Nightingale NM-1’s
Hi, David was not able to give me a company to go to, but I have settled on the Audiofriends one.
Can anyone just confirm before ordering, that they are definitely Peerless KO40-MDF’s. They have nothing marked on them other than 770425 stamped on the side casing’s. Thanks, Colin. |

Be aware that if your total order including shipping comes to more than £39 you will be liable to pay UK VAT at 20% and Royal Mail will charge £8 for collecting the amount from you. A quick guesstimate suggests that you should be within the £39 threshold but please check when ordering. Alan |

Re: Peerless K040 Mids in Nightingale NM-1’s
Thanks so much for that. I was totally unaware of the £39.00 threshold, so that will be really helpful.
Thanks, Colin. |

Re: Peerless K040 Mids in Nightingale NM-1’s
They are 100% Peerless KO40's there's no mid driver quite like em if your relatively familiar with vintage speaker drivers. The 6 digit serial # beginning with 77 is a give away too.
Andy.

Re: Peerless K040 Mids in Nightingale NM-1’s
Yes, they are very very special drivers with superb performance and nothing much matches their range, smoothness and their integrated rear chamber. People have been looking for alternatives ever since Peerless stopped making them, but the only real replacement is another Peerless K040.
At one time Philips sold something fairly similar. Just not quite similar enough. Anyway, the K040 is the heart of a number of famous speakers. David

Re: Peerless K040 Mids in Nightingale NM-1’s
Thanks all so much for your help, I ordered what I feel is the nearest equivalent foam from Audiofriends.
Looking forward to receiving them and meeting David, he seems a very interesting and experienced man. Colin. |
