I am unconcerned with how shiny they are, they perform a function and that's good enough for me. If there's lots of dust and detritus in between the plates I blow it out with a variety of 'blowing tools' depending on how bad it is, and if necessary use a half inch paint brush to remove any remaining more stubborn stuff. The odd spot of oxidisation doesn't concern me so long as it's working. My main concerns with tuning caps are getting a good, clean, highly conductive path between the moving plates and their spring contact. I also lube ball bearings with a light oil.

Look for the VFO section in the G3PDM synthesised receiver in the receivers chapter. It follows the G2DAF receiver and seriously out-weirds it
Shininess and rounded edges become helpful in transmitter tuned output stages and in ATUs where you want to discourage arcing. Too difficult to do for low power stages and receivers. David
