Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
Edward the Yellow/Red cap is red at one end and Black at the other I can't see any markings to state which is Negative or positive?

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
So Edward, So I shouldn't replace the burned out Resistor anymore instead just add a diode and a 150 ohm 10 watt resistor to replace the 2 metal resistors and the burned out resistor?

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
I think you mean two metal rectifiers?
The burned out resistor would appear to be R16 (Lawrence's diagram). If it still has continuity it would be useful to know its value.

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
Ken do not forget that there may well be a problem component downline of R16, i.e. the root cause of one of the metal rectifiers sparking and also possibly why R16 is well cooked.
Very difficult to know what without lots of tests. One of the first things I would suspect is capacitors C11/C12/C13, these I would guess are all in that large Hunts metal can capacitor next to the valves, i.e. a triple can capacitor. If one or more of these have become electrically leaky then they would cause excess current to flow. One symptom of a bad can capacitor is that the can would run quite hot to the touch. Note that can capacitors can hold a significant charge after power is switched off, enough to give unpleasant electrical shock if terminals are touched. Before doing any work around the can capacitor, always allow at least 15 minutes for the capacitors to fully discharge after switching off power. Also unless doing live testing (only do this if you are both competent and confident) always remove the mains plug from the wall socket before working inside the unit. David |

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
that can capacitor seems hard to get into , its 30uf 275v , I never work live I always have it unplugged, and stay off it for some time after its been on,thanks for the warning Dave

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
80 Ohms ?
The original value could have been 100 Ohms (so far as I can make out) like the one in the other thread that I linked to: https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...4&d=1546186483 MR1 = two FC 116's connected in parallel. So far as I can make out... R13 = 220 Ohms R14 = 22k R16 = 100 Ohms R8 = 2.2k or 2.7k (the band colours need verifying) EDIT: Post crossed. Lawrence. |

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
Yes Dave ill do that first, but how do I get into that Tin Can Hunts metal can capacitor next to the valves?

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
The burned out resistor would have a value of 100 to 150 ohms. It may still be OK. Why do you want to get "in" to the triple-capacitor can?

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
The units for the 0.08 measurement.
If the meter showed 0.08kOhms it would be 80 Ohms as Lawrence suggested, the units is this case would be kOhms. If the meter was showing 0.08 Ohms then that would be a dead short, the units in this case is Ohms. David |

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
Capacitor cans are sealed, you cannot get into them.
All you can do is measure them at their terminals on the underside of the can. David |

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
When you fit the new diode make sure that the MARKED end goes to the resistor.

Re: EAR De-Luxe Record Player
a closer inspection the burn out resistor shows it has came a way from the rectifier when it burned out , so has Dave say they must be a problem up stream is there any way to test c11 c12 c13 without opening the can?
