Default EKCO SH25 questions

I have just taken possession of an EKCO SH25 which I intend to restore and add to my collection. I have a couple of questions which I'm hoping someone can answer.

Does anyone have a good quality picture of the dial (which is in 2 parts MW and LW) as the one I have has been worn away in two places.

I can't seem to find any reference on how to string the dial cord and looking at the number of pulleys and attachment points I'm guessing it's not straight forward. Ignore the fact the current one has some 'string' attached it's there presumably for cosmetic reasons as it does absolutely nothing! Any help with this would be appreciated.

On my set there appears to be nothing between the 'willow trees' plate and the dial pointer is this the case or should there be some sort of clear plastic?

The loudspeaker appears to be mounted on what I can only describe as thick fibre board (which has been painted grey), is this original?

Thanks

I am in the final stages of restoring this set but I still need information on how to re-string the dial cord can anyone help? Surely someone out there must have an EKCO SH25?

I will take some pictures but unfortunately mine also needs restringing. I thought it was something I had done 25 or so years ago but clearly not. as the springs and remains of the dial chords in a bag tied to the chassis.

If I remember correctly there are two ends of the dial chords contra wound on the spindle and going to opposite sides of the tuning drum.

I measured my remnants and they came to 28"

It was hard enough to find this set finding my dial chord is a whole new challenge!

Cheers

Thanks Mike,

I'm making an assumptions there are two cords, one that drives the pointer and the other that moves the tuning capacitor from the spindle attached to the knob? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Those pictures are really helpful as it confirms the board supporting the loudspeaker and tuning scale is the same as the one on mine, although I'm going to re-create it from MDF as it's falling to pieces.

Yes there are two chords the one that drives the pointer is on the inner part of the tuning capacitor drum.
I will go up and take some more pictures of that shortly.

Looks like my speaker is going to need repair as well

Cheers

Thanks, that now makes it clear and it shouldn't be too difficult to work out the other one. Shame about the loudspeaker but at least you can completely dismantle it and repair.

I've attached some pictures of the original set and loudspeaker along with one of where I am now. The set is fully working and aligned so I just need to fully re-assemble and then work on getting the case polished.

If memory serves (it occasionally does) I believe there were pictures of this set
In one of the blue hardback ‘newnes’ servicing volumes where it’s taken apart with a cold
Chisel!
I seem to recall a chain drive to something but then I could be mixing it up with the similar RSx model??

Yes most of the pictures in Newnes were of the RS3 or is ir RS2 although there are pictures of the SH25 but stringing is neatly not mentioned or pictured.

Cheers

Yes that was the RS3 which looks an even more difficult set to work on than the SH25.

Interestingly the LW dial on your set Mike has more stations listed than the one I have, and mine also has Daventry listed as 5XX, so I'm assuming your set is a later production model.

The station scales on these can be replaced as was common at the time since there we so many changes occurring, but I will see if I can find anything with a date on it when I get a mo before I re-assemble the set, I don't have time to work on it at the moment

Cheers

In small print at the end of the scale mine is labelled scale no. 1 and I notice yours is labelled scale no. 2. I guess yours is ethier a later set or had new scales fitted.

The dial pointer and tuning condenser have now been re-strung and the new dials fitted. I have included some pictures of the stringing arrangement, the pointer requires one full loop at the pointer end secured in place by the screw and washer. The tuning condenser stringing is shown with the gang at minimum capacitance.

I will in due course produce some drawings for both of these and post here. The tuning condenser drive cord needs to be 30" long, unfortunately I didn't measure the other one as it was easier to start at the pointer end then feed the two loose ends through the various wheels and wrap around the rear of the drum attached to the tuning condenser.

If anyone is interested the colour I sprayed the dial plates is called strawflower and is available in B&Q

Nice work, chassis looks nice! I have an RS3 that I really need to finish off, it’s interesting that 2 sets that look so similar from the front are totally different inside!

As far as I remember the SH25 only exist because of a serious fire in the EKCO factory that meant they had to re-use the previous years cabinets.

I am sure there was a peice on this in either the set mzkers or BVWS bulletin.

I cant check at the moment as I am travelling.

Cheers
