The Eddystone 840-series radios being 'hot chassis' designs, I'd not really advise trying to fit any kind of internal scale-illimination.

For night-time operation of my 840A bedside-radio I went with a WWII-era "Lamps, Operator No.6 ZA11521" as detailed herer:

run from a 12-volt wall-wart power supply, so I didn't have to do anything to "Steady Eddie" and retained the ungrounded status of the light.

A lot of live chassis sets did have scale lamps, but retrofitting these to an existing set needs great care, and a full appreciation of the risks of mains voltage.
Small incandescent lamps wired in series with the valve heaters was a common approach.
The rated current of the lamps should be the same as the heater chain current.

Depending on the total voltage dropped by the lamps, the mains dropper may need adjusting.

An alternative approach is the use of mains voltage neon lamps, be certain to use high brightness types, which are still not that bright but might serve.
