Default Japanese barber pole motor

I have this non-working barber pole. I was expecting to find a self-contained synchronous motor unit in it with a plan to swap it for a 240v unit. However, things are more basic than that.

There appear to be a coil which acts on an aluminum(?) disc to created the rotation - this then turns the pole via a few gears. The coil is open circuit.

I'm hoping to rewind the coil to make it suitable for 240v rather than the original 100v. I obviously need to calculate the gauge of wire needs to get an appropriate current flowing.

Also will just just be a simple wound coil or will there be anything special in the way it is wound? I'm used to winding coils for pinball machines but not this!

Any ideas? Thanks

Given you have to rewind the coil anyway, it may be easier and safer to rewind it for low voltage operation. You can then use it with, say, an external 12V AC transformer or wall wart.

And low voltage LED illumination to match could help keep it safe.

looks quite a nice thing! The motor reminds me of those silent aquarium pumps that you can get, similar principle I'd say (eddy current drive).

THAT'S where I've seen it before. We used to have a gold one of those in a lab at school.

Thanks for suggestions about low voltage - good idea. So what sort of winding spec would I need for say 12v operation? And would it just be a simple wound coil or anything more complex?

It's often done with synchronous clocks, so googling around that may be a good place to start.
