Re: Forum Closing for Server Move 02/03/2022
Here in Deutschland the transition wasn't at all noticeable. Everything is working as it should, just a tad faster. In the past I have suffered different outcomes when a similar transition has happened, so well done Paul!

Wouldn't know you had changed anything! All OK here at work and probably at home as well.

Re: Forum Closing for Server Move 02/03/2022
A smooth changeover for me in that the forum works nicely and I dind't need to log in again but the appearance has changed (for me at least) to a very stripped down and basic look. Perhaps it's a setting or my browser (Firefox) which is to blame?
I have attached a screenshot. Steve.

No problems Downunder and noticeably faster, especially on clicking the 'Mark Forums Read' button.

Definitely faster, which is great, but the internal search feature (not the google search) is still not working well and does not seem to be fixing itself.

Also changing DNS provider (dead easy in Windows) would probably provide a fix. Try the clean up first though. A web search will show how to do any of those things easily. |

Re: Forum Closing for Server Move 02/03/2022
Thanks for your helpful tips - much appreciated - however this morning the site is back to its regular appearance without my doing anything. Happy days!
Steve.

It can happen when your broadband connection glitches for whatever reason.

I had that display, curiously some time after the reopening not immediately. Clearing cookies for this site only cured it.

Re: Forum Closing for Server Move 02/03/2022
Occasionally I browse the forum using an old Mac. When I click on a link to the forum I'm told 'this connection is not private'.
I think some members had a similar issue late last year. |

Re: Forum Closing for Server Move 02/03/2022
That is probably an issue with an out of date and unsupported version of Safari on the old Mac, not correctly recognising modern SSLs. There is nothing I can do about that and nothing has changed with that aspect with the server move. All I can suggest is to try installing the latest supported version of Chrome or Firefox on the system and see if it helps.

Re: Forum Closing for Server Move 02/03/2022
No glitches noted here; I guess you did the usual 'thing' of setting a DNS TTL of a-few-hundred-seconds a bit before the swapover. At least you're not fussed by the class of 'stiff' net-paranoid environments which see a sudden mid-session change of server-IP-address as a reason-to-revoke-credentials-and-block.

Re: Forum Closing for Server Move 02/03/2022
Yes, I set the TTL to 3600 seconds (1 hour) for a few days before, then changed it to 600 seconds (10 minutes) the evening before. I updated the A records on the old server as soon as the move was done, and people were here quickly. The forum remained closed on the old server and was only reopened on the new one.
I also updated the domain nameservers with the domain registrar to suit the new hosting but takes up to 72 hours to propagate (regardless of TTL) so people would have been using the DNS on the old server to get here for up to a few days. Overall it seems to have worked well and not upset anything that I'm aware of... |

Re: Forum Closing for Server Move 02/03/2022
As the move was over a week ago and there have been no significant issues, I'll close this thread now.
