Half wave rectified! Even more basic than I thought. Still, so long as it works...

And a Zener stabilised, with no current limiting resistor.
And there's the charging switch with the indicator lamp, as I remembered it. This was in the days when battery manufacturers had no interest in selling rechargeable cells to the public.
