But wasn't the problem the 'said telephone' would only transmit tones not speech ? Hence it was Bell's telephone of 1876 that was the first one known to successfully to transmit speech. Others make similar claims but nothing ever seems to have come of them.

The earliest book that mentions Bell's telephone that I have is a volume of 'The Cyclopedia of Self Instruction' of 1880 which has a description of Bell's telephones in the section on 'Natural Philosophy'. See attached for the page.

Plus some pictures of one of the said 'telephones' which I acquired about thirty years ago. I had waited outside the back door of the Science Museum for many years hoping they'd throw something out and one day I was lucky! Believe that if you want but I did get it from the Science Museum. It was a spare they didn't want and had had since they acquired it in 1911 and never done anything with. I want the lucky recipient! Telephone is made from gutta percha.

The patent date is that of AG Bell's UK patent for the telephone which he had invented earlier that year - he had patented in the US but not the UK!

Anyone got anything older?

It would, one bit audio, the first digital telephone, I bet that after a short while it would be understandable.
