An excerpt from Blue Peter showing the TV set fitted into Jon Pertwee's 'WhoMobile'. It appears to be a Rigonda VL100M. Not sure how they would operate the controls as they were on the side! There's the usual BBC strip of gaffa tape over the brand name.

During recent Episode 4 of "My Life As A Rolling Stone - Charlie Watts" a Grundig TK 14 Reel to Reel tape recorder was shown playing a tape that had the first ever recording of Charlie Watts dated 1959, at the Edgeware Jazz Club, when he was in the Joe Jones All-Stars.

The recording could not have been done on the TK 14 because it did not come out until around 1963.

The TK 14 had a red label on it "Studio 248" with a London address.

From a 1973 Benny Hill skit, "Jackie Wright's Holiday," there's a tatty looking scrolled fretwork intercom loudspeaker on the aeroplane taking Jackie to his destination by the operator Duffo Tours.

Quite a nice speaker and would look good when restored. Does anyone recognise it?

Symon

I've no idea which film or if it was from a film at all.

But I like it.

I don't think the fret and cloth are original. So many manufactured. Another anonymous speaker, the closest I could find.

You're probably right John. The fretwork does look in better condition compared to box.I expect it was adapted for the scene.
Out of that speaker came a message from the Captain which was heavily distorted and some heterodyne whistles thrown in for good measure. Quite funny!

Regards,
Symon.

I noticed watching ‘The Newsreader’ (an Australian production currently available on the BBC’s iPlayer) that there are lots of shots of Marconi VIII studio cameras.

The action is set in 1986 so whilst the cameras are of the correct vintage they would have been a bit long in the tooth by that time as that model was replaced by the MkIX in 1978.

Lots of (plausible?) technical detail (talk of removing the band I coil from the turret tuner so that the telly can't receive BBC) in The Duke, set in 1961.

A fun watch too.

Default PSB Prom mystery set

Greetings all,
I was wondering if anyone watched the Public Service Broadcasting prom on BBC4 this evening.
The whole piece was introduced by switching on a vintage radio, various shots of which were cut in throughout the performance. Unfortunately, none of which featured a manufacturer’s name or logo.
So, the question is does anyone recognise the featured set? I've had a quick look through ‘Radio Radio!’ but nothing seems to match.
My best guess would be a Murphy or McMichael or, is it sadly a prop department lash-up?
This prom was actually rather good, sublime music from the band Public Service Broadcasting and the BBC symphony orchestra, intermixed with some thought-provoking archive from the infant days of radio.
Well worth a watch.
Regards, Eric

RAP
Most likely this one

https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/rap_846_all_versions.html

A most unsuitable set IMHO should Have been something like A Marconi V2 from 1922

The RAP looks like a poor example covered in polyurethane varnish

Cheers

Hi Mike,
Looks spot on! and yes, your correct, surely they could have found a much older set.
Let's blame the 'media studies' researchers!
Cheers,
Eric.

I'd thought that the knobs looked like the bulky white RAP ones Halfabee-Mike. Not the most glamorous range of sets. I expected it to be described as a "Radiogram" as is often the case with radios on line, revealing an obvious lack of knowledge that a RG requires a Gram/Deck Other sets might have been more in period but not so visually appropriate/apparent re the audio/visual BBC history. Artistic License as usual! The "shifters" had the classic "Open All Hours" "Four Candles" Ronnie Barker brown coat look. That was probably authentic! Harmless enough I suppose. It wasn't Horizon after all

As for the performance itself, it was terrific and I suggest, a a must for radio enthusiasts! No doubt the Beeb might be accused of self aggrandising in some quarters but they did set Broadcasting up in the first place, whatever we might think about other aspects. I've not been too thrilled about recent attempts to "get down" with a yoof audience overall and combining classical music with modernistic developments [eg "progressive" rock] has often not worked so well but this was a bit of a triumph! There was also a hidden tribute to John Peel. He often used to play the famous Scapa Flow Naval commentary provided by someone who'd clearly been at the grog. It's funny but I think JP was also a little uncomfortable with it at the same time-a sensitive man. The overall effect of this AV History was extraordinary I thought and you can see from the intensity of the orchestral players that it was a win all round. Even leaving out multiple "encores" was a bit of a master stroke.

I've been following the various presentations of PSB for a long time and only a few years ago saw them live at the Ramsbottom Music Festival* [held on the Cricket Ground]. There's never been any shortage of good documentaries in which the visuals might be nothing without the sound track, that's why we can have Film Programs on the Radio but the concept of consistently presenting sound and vision as a developing live act was one of those ideas that are so simple in retrospect.

* The name was inexplicably changed to "Head For The Hills" but Rammy is in a valley and the title usually suggests running away from something

They probably wanted something that would be visually impressive on a stage. At least they didn't just grab the nearest DAC90.

Even more so when they lit up the RGB LEDs inside.

Was it even a real radio case, or something made in the prop shop ?
