Default Oddest Place You've Seen a UK Made Set

To compliment the thread on odd imports, I wanted to find out the most unusual places people have seen UK made sets.

Not just UK spec, but sets made for export that have turned up in odd places.

I know a few 405 line sets have been exported by enthusiasts, & can be made to work with an Aurora & suitable power supply adjustments.

Somewhere I read that both Australia & New Zealand considered using 405 lines when they were planning a TV service, & possibly some people imported sets from the UK anticipating this.

As we've mentioned elsewhere it's simple to convert a system I set to system G, but without a VHF tuner system B wouldn't be available.

An HMV1806 405 line set dating from 1949 in an antique shop in Lucca, Italy, priced at 700 euros.

Finding a new UK-made set anywhere would be quite a surprise.

I was slightly surprised to spot this Ferguson TX sold in Portugal on the Radio Museum.

When we've mentioned UK made sets being exported in Europe before, Thorn seemed to concentrate on the Scandinavian countries by the 1970s, adding to my surprise.

There were also Vestel badged Ferguson TX sets, so presumably quite popular in Turkey at the time. Google Image Search brings up lots of hits.

Thanks, that's very interesting to know, especially as Vestel these days make sets for many different brands.

Were they simply badged as Vestel or were they imported into Turkey as kits?

Around the same time Cihan were making sets in Turkey using Samsung componants.

Good question! To which I have absolutely no idea! I'd hazard a guess, as there doesn't seem to be any sort of localisation in terms of language i.e. all of the legends/ function buttons look to be in English..and they are still carrying the Ferguson/ Ferguson TX logos, so possibly a simple re-badge. Looks to be the same story with the VCR's, from what I've seen.

One set appears to have 'PAL/ SECAM' printed across the control door, so perhaps they were also filtering their way into Middle-Eastern markets (via Turkey) in general.

I guess you'd only need to localise the instruction manual/ paperwork, or have one covering several languages, keeping costs to a minimum.

Thorn did (mostly) rentals. These sets were branded Thorn. Only a few sets were sold. These were branded Ferguson. The market share was low.

In the 80's in the TX-era they stopped rental of Thorn/Ferguson sets. They supplied sets of more or less the brand of your choise.

One chain sold Rank sets, but after they went out of business that stopped.

I only saw one PYE set. That was a 26" 110 degree delta thing. I couldn't get service info on it. Probably no distributor in Norway.

Thanks for filling me in, I did wonder if renting was common in other countries.

I know Australia had (unrelated) Radio Rentals shops, but often they were open ended rentals, with the option to buy after a few years.

Renting was not common here, only a few people did. Thorn did also rent white goods.
