I once made a Kerr Cell out of a shortwave tuning capacitor immersed in nitrobenzene with polarising sheets. Even with 1000v across it, it failed to convincingly modulate, but I feared it would explode! Nitrobenzene is not something you want scattered across a room. I'll take the LCD thanks...

Well, I went back to the shop tonight. It seems that the set is part of a collection of early musical instruments (some of which were also on display), and is in no danger of going in a skip. Several quite posh people spoke to me - it was not immediately for sale, but if you want it, you might need deep pockets

Late last year a thirty line mirror drum and motor appeared for sale on ebay. I placed a bid for it but it finally sold for +1000 pounds. So it's easy to speculate what a complete 1933 Bush-Baird 30 line TV receiver will sell for.

It's in far better condition than the Bradford Museum one. I wonder it they would be interested?

As Forsyth's is the 'go to' place ito have your Steinway french polished, it occured to me that its owner might have sent it there to be refinished prior to sale, and part of the deal was that they would display it.

I'm lucky in that the more expensive something is, the less I find myself interested in it!

I notice that the widow display is not flagged up as such [or as an event] on their website Marc. Did the posh boys give any indication as to how long those items are likely to remain in situ? I might wander in and check out a few guitars when I'm back but that won't be any time soon. The only time I ever had a brand new one [a Hofner President] was in the sixties on hire purchase but I think that was at Mameloks [also on Deansgate?].

I traded it in when it was realised that my younger brother [you've met him] was a bit of a drumming genius, in order to get him a decent kit. It wasn't just on financial stringency grounds but mainly that I felt embarrassed by my father's generosity when I could hardly play the thing unlike my brother... who made 6 months progress on the skins in 6 weeks! In fact, I was much happier with cheaper guitars I could experiment with, changing pick ups, wiring, switches etc

More to the point, hopefully they have decent security. 30 line TVs are something of a target and it's now had quite a bit of publicity.

Indeed, Miss Taylor's shop in Kingsgate Huddersfield was burgled in the late 70's and it looks like the only thing they were after was the old Baird Bacon Slicer that she kept on top of the inside display cabinet.

I phoned the firm last week enquiring to find out if the set was for sale. I left them my shop phone number but there was no reply. It was explained to me that the set is part of the companies' collection of vintage musical instruments. But rest assured the set is in safe hands, they are aware of the historic importance of this 30 line mirror drum receiver.

The radio part is a simple TRF receiver. There is a switch to operate the set as a radio or as a vision only receiver.
