TV set on BBC1 Make Me a Dealer programme. - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

Hi Guys.

This set used on the BBC1 program "Make me a dealer" is very familiar but I can't for the life of me remember whether or not they were actually a colour set.

Any information on it would be interesting.

Pretty sure it’s a black and white set, there was one on eBay a while back, but I can’t remember what make it was!

That is a mono set with the picture pasted on.
Look at the edges and you well be able to see that they don't line up with the edges of the tube.

Isn't it a Bush Cadet? The styling is very 70's RBM. ISTR 'BUSH' in red to the top left of the control section.

Yes Its a mono portable usually marketed as a Bush Ranger. The Cadet name was used on models not sold through a Bush dealer like mail order firms or wholesalers. The same as when Ferguson sold sets badged as Ultra outside of the dealer network and as Logik when sold to/by Currys

Good old British badge engineering! stick a Pye in a posh box and call it a Dynatron!

Lots of mono sets appear on TV with colour pictures on them I suppose it just needs to look like an old telly and genuine old colour sets are usually large and hard to find.. They could have used a Ferguson 37140 or 37141 in this case though, around the same age ish and genuine colour!

Yes, a Bush "Ranger".

I found one on a skip in the early 1990s, fixed it, and gave it to some friends who were also hard-up students living in a shared house.

They loved it, and adorned its tuning dial with a neat self-adhesive label with BBC1, BBC2, ITV and C4 marked on it.

It was still going strong when C5 came along. One of their engineers called to re-tune their equipment, and they got him to add it to the label!

Somewhere I have the varicap tuning assembly from one of these. It's strung just like an old AM radio, but with a potentiometer rather than a capacitor.

I would have said "Bush Cadet", I had one in my bedroom (I think my parents thought it safer than the Bush TV125 I had won from a friend up the road.) So interesting to realise such a model didn't really exist.

I think ours is still in the loft and the instruction manual is here; at no point is the name Bush printed. Just Rank Radio International. The model number is CM6519. Dire warnings that your guarantee will be invalid if you burn the CRT face with the image of one of those new-fangled video games.

I owned a couple of 'face-lifted' Ranger 3s with the all-black front panel. An image search suggests the Ranger name was used on a Mk.4 model too, which looked quite different.

They weren't bad sets and did compare fairly favourably with the far Eastern imports.
Usual problems were with the power supply (rectifiers, transistors), aerial sockets, customer controls and the tuner, a Rank special, which failed frequently. The LOPT was quite reliable. The chassis was hinged like a door, so you soon learned never to leave the CRT base on while opening it!

Indeed. They did this on the drama about Jeremy Thorpe, don't remember the name of it.

Guess it makes sense to use a Thorn 1500 in place of a 3000 considering the difference in weight yet similar controls bar the extra colour control of course.

That first set looks like the 1500 we had when I was a teenager.
The modern TV companies more often than not love to shop them with a colour picture.

The 1971 film, "Percy" also showed a 1500 displaying a colour picture!

Surely it would be easier to either get a colour TV of the period or else just display a black and white picture? After all, working 1500s aren't that thin on the ground!
Was in a customer's house yesterday afternoon and saw a bit of that programme. Why does everything have to be so staged? Glad I don't actually have a TV at home!

We had one of those, early 80's but I'm sure it was badged Ultra - got it for my ZX81 but my mum soon nabbed it for her pre-natal bedroom...

I remember it being a not-too-good TV but a quite good monitor

Never seen an Ultra version - Murphy, Cadet and Bush yes. The Ultra used a 1691 chassis with the tuning knob at the bottom. Of course I could be wrong!

I agree with Glyn. An ULTRA-badged one would be highly unlikely as the ULTRA brand was still in use by Thorn/BRC at the time, and they had their own range of mono portables.
