Default Murphy B40D Single Sideband Converter

Hello All:

It was suggested that I check in here after posting the following question to the North America Antique Radio Group:

I recently acquired a Murphy B40D. This particular Murphy came with a SSB Converter, which by all appearances was designed to operate with the B40. I have seen pictures online of the SSB Converter, and this one looks a bit different. As you can see from the speakers I have posted there is what appears to be a speaker on the right hand side, and the pictures I have found online seem to have another analog meter in this spot.

I am wondering if anyone has any documentation on the SSB converter, and more specifically any information on the interconnects between the B40 and the Converter?

I will probably be posting more on the B40D. While this one is in great cosmetic shape there are a couple of issues I must address. The receiver works and appears to be on frequency which is all very good news. What I have discovered in the few hours I have had to test it is The drum seems to have jammed, it worked briefly, and then started sticking. The BAND Select indicator located above the Band Switch is stuck on Band 2. The speaker has also ceased to function after toggling the LS Switch, but audio is being provided to the headphones, which I makes me think this has to be minor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
The manual for the SSB converteris on the 19 Set Group Archive site at www.royalsignals.org.uk
The document is listed under "Other UK and Commonwealth Transmitters and Receivers"
Document title is "Handbook for Receiver Adaptor Outfit FAZ (B40/B41 SSB Adaptor) JUl 1967"
Good luck

Hi Peter:

Thanks for sharing this information! I tried to download the document, but apparently I am doing something wrong. I will email the administrator later today.

I would have had a very difficult time identifying that as the document I need without you assistance.

Best of luck with that. I’ve never managed to get anything from that site despite jumping through all the hoops

The speaker switch is a bit of a weak point on these- whilst it has a quaintly 19th-century sort of air to it with its clunky open construction, it can be somewhat erratic in operation, sometimes one of the contact rollers fails to go across and either make or break contact when required. Where this ceases to be funny is that the mains switch is of the same type and it can leave you with a situation where the receiver is apparently powered down but the transformer still has live mains connected to it. Beware!

Clarification: The switches in question are those used in the receiver, not the converter.

I suspect the Speaker issue is the switch too. The speaker was running until I threw the switch. I will have to dig deeper when I get it open. My primary concern right now is to confirm the operation of the SSB Converter, and see where I stand with everything integrated.

While I was able to get the receiver into my house, I need help getting it down a flight of stairs into my lab area, so taking it apart is on hold for the moment.

Now onto trying to get this manual!

The FAZ was made by McMichael. Here's a copy of the Navy manual.

In the meantime I have written the moderator at royalsignals.org.uk to see about obtaining the documentation. After trying two three browsers, a PC, and a Mac I gave up on the download without assistance from the site moderators.

2000 Type - If you are still having trouble uploading the documents I could provide you an email address for those documents. I appreciate you posting about them here.

It seems that the file is too large so is rejected. (but there's no message to tell you that).
Send me a PM and I'll send it direct.

All:

I would like to thank 2000 Type for kindly sending me the manual for the SSB Adapter. After review of this manual, I now see that virtually all the interconnects between the B40D and the SSB Adapter are simply pass through to “Ships Wiring”.

As usual, I over thought the interface between the two, but glad I have this sorted out now. Now I can proceed with a bit more confidence.

Now on to addressing the mechanical problems with the LS Switch, Band Switch, and Tourette. As soon as my friend comes over to help me lug this down a flight of steps, I will be able to open it up and see how much mechanical work is needed.

Last night, I was able to inject a signal using my Marconi 1024, and as a rough estimate the MDS on 80 Meters was -126dBm which I think is pretty fantastic all considered.

You guys have been great, and I am sure there will be a few questions remaining as I attempt a crack at the mechanical assemblies.

I don't think that's the case. See the attachment to this post where I tried to upload an oversize file.

Well I guess I missed that message. Forgiveable, perhaps on a first attempt?

Glad everyone's happy now.

This is a copy of the rear connections on the ssb converter. A coaxial lead from the B40rx IF output to socket B on the converter.
