Motor needed
Hi guys
New to the forum and wondered if anyone can help me. Big vinyl fan, just acquired a Pilot tube amp record player with Monarch deck. I believe it to be a BSR UA12. I am in need of a new motor or advice please |

Re: Motor needed
Can you describe the symptoms? Motor failure is very unusual.

Re: Motor needed
We plugged it in. It played for around a minute and then we could smell burning and saw smoke and it stopped.

Re: Motor needed
That looks well toasted! Unusual failure. Off chance- was the player set for 120V supply, perhaps?
What's the Pilot Model? It's possible a short in the amplifier could burn out the motor windings if a motor tap is used for heater supplies. Ultimately a replacement motor or deck could probably be sourced, but a careful service of the valve amp may well be needed to avoid a further meltdown!

Re: Motor needed
This would have used a motor tap for the "U" series valves. A 90V tapped donor motor from a suitable BSR UA12 or BSR UA14 will be needed. However a used (and more commonly available) replacement UA14 deck might be the easiest option.

Re: Motor needed
To reiterate what Chris said, don't just fit a new motor. Find out if there's anything which killed it first!

Re: Motor needed
Having looked at the service info, (available here: https://www.service-data.com/product...26/6261/a14926 ), it would seem there is no motor tap but instead a dropping resistor for the valve heaters. The motor is connected via switches directly to the incoming mains supply.
So... it looks like a simple motor failure, unusual, but...... The suggestions for motor replacement are still valid- if you get one with a tapped winding, just ignore the tap. There is still a need for an informed check and service to the valve amplifier. There are a few cheap and easily replaced parts (if you can solder) which can fail just with time and may cause other rather expensive parts to fail!

Re: Motor needed
I may be wrong here but by the look of the picture the motor fitted does have a 90V tap.
I have never had a BSR motor fail and I must have repaired a large number of these over the years. Something odd here especially as it worked for a while. By the look of the motor it appears to have an incorrect mangled fixing screw on the right. It looks as if someone has been fiddling with the motor or replaced it and wired the mains across the 90V tap. A lot of heat has been produced. John. |

Re: Motor needed
The deck looks like it's a 4-speed one.....

Re: Motor needed
Not sure if the BSR UA12 is a 3 or 4 speed unit, I do have this 4 speed motor if it is any use, it has a 90v tap.

Re: Motor needed
Both the BSR UA12 and UA14 are 4 speed units.

Re: Motor needed
Definitely needs proper investigation before a new motor is fitted. It does look like the motor has been messed with.

Re: Motor needed
That blue tape looks like a past attempt at a repair, indicative of a motor running on borrowed time.
