Default Grundig One Off Radiogram Help

I have purchased a radiogram for the princely sum of £10 primarily because I like the cabinet !!

I thought it was a Pye from the photographs I was sent but the service label has Grundig on it .... the turntable is a BSR UA8 I think.

I only had a chance to take a few quick photos of its new warm dry abode at my mothers.

Can anyone help identify it as the seven button + two tone controls has me stumped ...

You have left off the logo badge on the first photo.
Is there a back panel to the radiogram, if it is missing are there any labels inside on the radio chassis.

There is a one off back panel with nothing on it ... this is the tuning eye but no logo ... also this is the quick shot with the back off ... I'll have more time tomorrow to see what's what.

I think the 'logo badge' is where the magic eye would reside. It does look 'Grundig' though.
Where is the speaker(s)?

Hi, despite the radio section looking like a Grundig the cabinet has a very Dynatron esque look to it, and they used Pye/Philips innards for a lot (all?) of their equipment.

The red herring is the BSR UA8 autochanger as I would have expected Grundig to have used a Philips changer, additionally it looks like someone has tried to replace the original crystal cartridge with a Magnetic one which isn't a good idea on an autochanger of this type for a number of reasons.

There's a ferrite rod rotation control on the front, that was popular with some German manufactures.

I also note that there's a 1970s(?) MAGNETIC cartridge fitted (well, hanging off!), which suggests some modification has been done.

Could we have some pics of the insides?

The pair of identical speakers sit below the chassis in the box diagonally opposite the turntable. I was told the set was custom made for someone in London.

Could be a Siemens set.

See attached photo of Siemens G41, similar in a few ways

Grundig did use British turntables, I've seen one or two with Collaro decks in them. I think the Philips tie up came in the mid 60's.

Looking at the cabinet above, the speaker/speakers can only be situated firing from out of the LHS - is that correct?

Hello. What does it say on that label in the back ?
It seems to have a make written on it.
The picture is too fuzzy when I zoom in.

It certainly looks very German .....

The BSR UA8 changer dates it as late 1950s / early 1960s, and appears to have been retrofitted with a magnetic cartridge (Vernitron V-100?) which would not be a direct replacement for the original TC8 mono crystal cartridge usually found in this changer. It would require a preamplifier or transformer. That might or might not be present, as the job appears half-finished with the cartridge dangling off its wires. Have you still got the fixing screws? They are almost certainly an obsolete thread form .....

I think that the BSR turntable has been retro-fitted....the cut-out in the motor board is visible and looks like it might be for a different deck. It certainly won't work with a magnetic cartridge even if a pre-amp is fitted.....No way will the pick-up track at a few grams.

The radio chassis in picture one of the first post doesn't look original to me (unless its just not fixed in properly?)
You wouldn't see the lower half of the edgewise tone controls below the plastic trim normally, just the bit above to operate with your thumb

I think that's probably the answer.

It's been custom made for someone, perhaps the cabinet was already made and then it was modified to take a radio chassis and record deck etc.

You can clearly see there's slots cut in the bottom of the record storage compartment to take wooden dividers that would have also located in slots in the top of the compartment, but this part has been removed, as you can see the wiring from the record deck hanging down, possibly indicating that a different deck has been fitted from the original.

As has been mentioned, the bottom of the controls are exposed on front panel, indicating a non-professional cabinet conversion.

There's also something not quite right about the way the door hinges are exposed - something you wouldn't normally find on something of this quality.

So it looks like a standard table radio innards has been used to build a custom radiogram - nicely done though.

Maybe the exposed controls is because the chassis isn't fully forward, you can still see part of the reveals.

4th photo shows all ok.

Lawrence.
