It appears that Peter's got as much info as there is in the group, and things have wandered as far as the sort of villages which have incredible murder rates - according to the telly, so it must be true. If some itinerant detective solves the whodunnit, it can be reopened easily enough.

It looks like the advice in the thread has worked! I got this message from Peter:

Thanks to Graham Rabstaff's local history link I decided to phone one or two people whose names in the phonebook correspond with those mentioned in the article and one gentleman remembers the name of the man who sold me the set. It was Michael Scott.

I'll leave the thread open in case anyone comes up with any information on the chap

Thanks Graham.

The Bolventor history link mentions a family by the name of Nottle so it didn't take me very long to phone the locals of that name and one of them asked locally and came back with the name Michael Scott and that triggered my wife's memory to confirm it.

Mr Nottle suggested that Michael Scott is now dead so I've now started looking at BMD lists but unfortunately Scotts are are common as muck.

Anyway, I'm writing to Mr Nottle with the photo below.

That’s not much of an innings, poor chap.

My guess of his age in post 2 wasn’t far off.

Thanks Phil,

I agree, he is a possible. The only problem is that my wife thinks that his father had previously owned the television and that he lived in north London before the war but it doesn't look as if the father of this Michael Scott ever left Cornwall. There are two other possibles unfortunately without any parental information.

There's a Michael J SCOTT, Birth registered December 1932 at Bodmin, mothers maiden name is recorded as TREVERTON, there's a Gladys M TREVERTON that married a John R SCOTT, the marriage was registered in September 1931 at Bodmin.

From what I can gather John R SCOTT's middle name was Richard.

Lawrence.

Thanks Lawrence. I did find that guy but couldn't find anything about his father that put him in London at any time. It would have been good if he'd appeared in the 1939 England and Wales Register but he's not there.

No problem, I haven't found a London connection either.

Michael J Scott appears in the 1939 Register with his mother and older sister. Perhaps Father had died?

There is a Ewart Michael Scott who 8 in 1939 and living in Dartford, Kent. His father Sydney F. Scott died in April 1984 in Camborne-Redruth. He was a School teacher.

If you're sure of his name and that he died in Cornwall that would narrow down the possibilities, out of them it might be worth obtaining a copy of the death certificate(s) for the most likely, amongst other things it should give some details about the informant which might be a clue to something.

Thanks Lawrence. I agree that getting copies of death certificates is very useful as the informant listed will often be contactable. I'm just not confident enough with any of the possibles. It costs £25 nowadays to get a death certificate.

I am fairly confident with the Michael Scott name because my wife, who has a much better memory than me, instantly remembered the coincidence. (My middle name is also Michael.)

I did get one other piece of information from Mr Nottle. He thought that Michael Scott worked for a local farmer whose name was Throttle. I was somewhat sceptical of all these "ottles" and asked him to spell it. He declined so I spelt it and he agreed. I think he is a rather elderly gentleman as he has called me back on several occasions thinking that I had called him. I assume his phone has a redial button. Anyway, I can't find any Throttles although Tottle is a fairly common name in the area but didn't connect with any nearby farm.

The house in my photos is marked on OS maps as Deep Hatches Farm but I suspect that it has been subsumed into another farm and the current owner of the building knows nothing of previous occupants. I did phone the nearby Vicarage Farm but they had no knowledge.

I also tried looking for a radio connection for Sydney F. Scott but failed there too.

When Mr Nottle receives my letter that includes a photo it might trigger further information but I won't build my hopes up.

I don't know where you got that figure from. The cost is £11.00.

I've ordered enough of them in my time!

I can make a couple of enquires I went to school with a lot of the local farmers and my friend lives in Redgate, (radio ham).

I dropped in a few times myself although I never knew his name.

I am still wondering if this is the set I missed out on in Camborne?

I find it hard to believe it's just a coincidence.

If that's the case then the dealer was not the original owner.

Cheers

Thanks Graham, That is nearer to the £7 I remember paying on a previous occasion. The £25 figure came from Ancestry. https://www.ancestryshop.co.uk/certi...rt_details.php

Thanks Mike, any further clues would be much appreciated. Redgate is certainly not far away.

Ancestry just buy the certificates from the ONS and make a nice profit by doing so. There are various companies doing this. The same goes for passport and visa applications.

No more discussion about this please.

The only other minor piece of information I have is that Michael Scott was on the mailing list for Tudor Rees' Vintage Wireless Newsheet as that is how he came to contact me.

This may be a bit of paranoia and unfair to Mr Scott, but a dealer may be shy of revealing the previous owner of an item. You can imagine: 'and how much did you pay for it'? 'The *&^^%$ paid me xxx'!
I did buy an HRO from flat over a junk shop, at good price, and was told 'it belonged to my dad', which I wasn't sure about! I think that sounds better than 'I was paid to take it away in a house clearance', etc.
Good luck with your search.
I wonder if one avenue may be an article on the set in your local paper, if they are interested as a thing of history, and a request for info on previous owners. You may find it belonged to someone's auntie, etc.

Just a point, I hope on topic but surely there would not have been many pre war sets or even any in Cornwall?

A bit far from A/ Palace.
