AVO Meter 12C Beginners advice
Hi there
I've had an avo meter now for a few years, on and off I use it, never feeling quite as confident about it's operations as my digital meters. When in operation, do I have the meter standing up or laid on it's back? |

Re: Avo Meter 12C Beginners advice
If the movement is (mechanically) balanced properly it shouldn't make much difference.
But M.G.Scroggie said in his 'Radio and Electronics Laboratory Handbook' that panel meters were normally calibrated for use vertically while test meters were designed to be held or laid flat. So put it on its back. |

Re: Avo Meter 12C Beginners advice
As Tony said, if the AVO is balanced properly, it shouldn't make that much difference.
I haven't got a Manual in front of me, but as I remember, AVO specified the balance error in a vertical position to be not more than 1%. However, AVO made it very clear that the Meter should be used lying on its back. That's how it was calibrated in the factory. Due to the age of AVO Meters now, it is very likely the Balance will be out somewhat. In short, if you are looking for an accurate measurement, use it on its back. If you are using it for rough indication purposed, use it any way that's convenient. Interestingly, when I was a Repair Tech in industry back in the 80's, we had our AVO's on a Stand, holding them at 45 Degrees. It's not always easy to see the scale lying flat when your fault finding something. Ian |
