Pye Rambler 14 35BX1045/05S
I've picked up the set that marc_in_manc offered a few day ago.
It looks like it it will be a long term project, so far I've only done the basics. The good news is that I could tune it into a games console & ran for a few minutes without showing any problems. The front pots seemed to be operating without any noise, & are probably easy to access compared to the 12" chassis as the are at the side of the CRT. The bad news is the condition of the case is poor, with the paintwork quite messy and lots of scratches and a couple of patches that look like the plastic has melted. While it could be repainted if I could find a good paint match, but the melted parts would need to be smoothed down & refilled like car bodywork. I've given it a wipe over so far with anti-bacterial spray and removed some paint spots with white vinegar. Other problems include a loose aerial socket, a missing vertical hold knob and a slight buzzing sound when the set is plugged in but turned off. Another potential worry is the case screws don't look original, so I hope it's not been bodged.

I've taken some pictures of the case.
I'm wondering if it's worth trying to find a spares or repair set with a decent case, rather than trying to mess about with paint & filler. I'll try to get some pictures of it working later on.

The buzzing is the mains transformer so if it isn't loud that's normal. I think the original screws have a Pozidriv head and have coarse self tapping threads for plastic.
The 2 screws visible in the picture, are in very peculiar locations so the original holes may have been destroyed. |

I have a Marantz tuner that has a similar 50Hz buzz when it's plugged it.

Re: Pye Rambler 14 35BX1045/05S
In that case, likely not a problem. Both the Marantz tuner and this TV have permanently powered mains transformers. Switching them off at the socket after use, is the best solution for avoiding power consumption and wear and tear.

Re: Pye Rambler 14 35BX1045/05S
Depending on what sort of paint is splashed on it, I’ve had a set that had been painted with bog standard emulsion paint, I took it to bits and chucked it in the bath for a long soak (I thought it could do with a bit of relaxation...) and the paint mostly peeled off, might be worth a try? If not a rub down and respray will get it looking quite smart again!

Here’s a picture of the set in action there is a hairline scratch on the screen but it’s only visible when the screen is showing a lot of light things.
