Invicta Record Player (1958) Repair.
Can anybody name this record player please?
The only identifying mark is an emblem of a prancing horse. A look online suggests this could be Agrosy or Invicta. The turntable is a Collaro Conquest. The amplifier is a 'one valve wonder' fitted with a ECL82 and a bridge rectifier. Any information would be appreciated! |

Re: Can Any Anybody Recognise This Record Player?
Is that an Invicta badge?
Hard to see on my phone. Cheers Mike T

Re: Can Any Anybody Recognise This Record Player?
Looks like it to me, though I don't now have an Invicta example to compare it with. Invicta radios at the time were mostly clones of Pye models, so that might be a promising direction in which to look.

Re: Can Any Anybody Recognise This Record Player?
I think that's a Vanguard badge. I know Hitachi had a hand in them at one stage.

A decent picture of the badge would help
Cheers Mike T

Re: Can Any Anybody Recognise This Record Player?
The picture looks good enough for me (no smartphone), but I've only a memory of the Invicta badge to compare it with. Is this version any better?
Paul EDIT: I think this settles it, the second image here is magnified from a photo of an Invicta Model 30. Last edited by Paul_RK; 6th Dec 2022 at 11:49 am. |

Re: Can Any Anybody Recognise This Record Player?
My bad now on PC I can see the 4th picture that I didn't see on my mobile (operator error I suspect!).
Yes that looks like the Invicta badge to me. Ben do you have a picture of the Vanguard Badge I don't recall seeing one (other than car). Cheers Mike T

Re: Can Any Anybody Recognise This Record Player?
I'm sure that this in an Invicta. Argosy/Regentone did not use the ECL82 + MR format or Collaro units. If it's using a Collaro "Conquest" that would date it to 1958. In this period Argosy (Regentone) used the UL84/UY85 type of amplifier.

Re: Can Any Anybody Recognise This Record Player?
Thanks for the replies so far.
The smoothing can is dated October 1957. The amplifier does not have any identifying marks. I'll have a look through my data CD. |

Re: Can Any Anybody Recognise This Record Player?
They seemed to use at least three variants! One with just an arrow/lance, one modification of the U in the word and another like that pictured.

Collaro Conquest Safety Capacitors?
Soon I will start working on a Collaro Conquest record changer that will be used in a record player with a live chassis (autotransformer).
Under the deck I noticed two capacitors (0.1uf and 0.01uf). I'm not too sure about their function at the moment but I imagine that they are safety capacitors that isolate the deck from potentially becoming live. This is the first time in years that I've worked on a live chassis set and the only time that I've worked on a live chassis record player so I thought I'd ask here before I proceed. Since these components are safety critical, I'd wager that suitable mains suppression capacitors should be used. Should X type or Y types be used here? Thanks |

Re: Collaro Conquest Safety Capacitors?
Y types to be used when connected between mains and chassis. X types to be used when connected across mains. So in your case, use Y specified caps since one end is connected to chassis.
In general, ALWAYS replace safety caps! Only safe thing about old safety caps is, that it is safe to say they will fail. Regards, Jan |

Re: Collaro Conquest Safety Capacitors?
These caps look fairly new though, certainly not the originals.
