Default Vintage Sony SS5100 speakers - how to connect?

Bought these today for a tenner because they looked interesting, were pretty much mint and were reassuringly heavy... (Don't need them of course, but that has never stopped me.)

The rear connectors (red and blue) push in. Can I pull them out and put banana plugs in? If not, how do I connect the speaker cables? Don't want to force or break anything.

Also, there does not seem to be much about these online, I guess they are from the same early 1970s era as my ST-88 tuner, which has similar wood finish (although not as nice as the 5100s).

Are these any good at all? I can't take the grilles off to see what's what driver wise, but look like two-way affairs.

Thanks

Don't the sprung buttons just push in to open the clamp hole at the top for bare wires?

I have a pair of the bigger brothers to these somewhere, in teak. The grilles on mine are removable but I suspect the smaller ones were fixed, catalogue pictures never showed the smaller ones with the grill off.

Ah, that's brilliant thanks, got them working now. They sound really nice, sweet treble considering they've probably not been played for years.

The grilles do come off, I pulled gently at the wooden corners and off they came. But what is underneath is cosmetically horrible, so I'll leave them on.

Will leave them playing away to the radio for a few hours and have another listen later.

You're right, what's underneath is not pretty - mine are similarly ugly under the skin.

At least the drivers wont rattle or provide air leaks. Yes, it looks tacky but is a good idea.
I tend to use special soft foam to acheive the same results.
