My CD100 won't work, it all lights up but the turntable won't turn. Any ideas please?

To be honest Ben I bought it about twenty years ago at a car boot sale. It worked fine until last week, having not been used for about four years previously. The table turns briefly when I turn it off. Can you recommend any actions?

Have you cleaned the optics? Tried original CDs (ideally of under 60 mins)? any noise from the mech?
Thanks Ben, I've cleaned the optics with cotton buds. It was filthy and I was a bit scared as I didn't want to damage it.

Time to sell Philips CD100 any offers

My Philips CD is for sale any offers, mint condition and works perfect.

By the optics, Ben means the laser pick up, you need to use a cotton bud with some CD laser cleaner and carefully clean off the dust and dirt.

I would check the power supplies, especially the -18V supply, which is derived from a voltage doubler using electrolytic capacitors circuit reference 2290 and 2291 (100uF 35V and 100uF 25V). As they have not been changed for twenty years, both are likely to be faulty as they are highly stressed in that circuit.

My CD100 doesn't have a belt, I don't think!

I would put an oscilloscope on all the supplies. These early machines are very susceptible to the supplies failing.
It might be worth replacing all the IC Regulators just as a matter of course.
Also, check the Door Close sensing switch. It may have become bent out of shape and not making good contact.

The service manual (granted it is the Dutch version but the schematic will be the same) can be found here:-
http://www.hifiengine.com/manuals/philips/cd100.shtml

Others on here have more experience with this type of player, Howard for example.

Please let me know if you got it to run? and how as I have a CD100 that plays intermittently (although it has some distortion now and again ). Mine has the door/mechanism missing (I'm looking to find a non working example to enable me to restore it).

Regards,
Tim.
