Pye Black Box Chinoiserie Design
Hi
I have a Pye Black Box with chinoiserie designs on it. In fact I have two. I saw a thread on here saying that they came out at the same time as the plain mahogany box version. I was always told that the Chinoiserie was the original and too expensive so the plain one was released. Is this true? And does anyone know how many chinoiserie versions were made? Just wandering how many will be left out there. Any help is appreciated Just trying to expand my knowledge Trev Last edited by Trevpye; 1st May 2022 at 8:07 pm. |

Re: Pye Black Box Chinoiserie Design
You are lucky to have two of these. They will be early versions from 1955, indeed possibly very late 1954. Both versions were released at the same time roughly in the ratio of 1 to 10 in favour of the sapele veneered version. Yes, they were expensive to buy and produce. Production of these ended in 1956. From then on it was just the standard cabinet.

Re: Pye Black Box Chinoiserie Design
Hello,
Last time I saw a chinoiserie version of the BB was at a Harpenden swapmeet some 20 (or even more) years ago. I have that mid 60’s transistor "Black" Black Box in a piano black finish I bagged at Tonbridge. I did see another on the net, but sadly the link in the OP has gone belly-up. https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...d.php?p=932463 I’ve got a PCL83 BB jobbie to restore. I decided to keep this BB when I had the mass clear-out. Miracle of Miracles it has a good o/p t/x! Terry |

Re: Pye Black Box Chinoiserie Design
Not many. Not only were there very few made, they were only produced over about a 20 month period. If there are any around fitted with a BSR 4 speed UA8 autochanger from mid-1956 onwards they will be extremely rare. I've never seen one.
