Default Ferrograph series pinch wheel

I've inherited three Ferrograph Series seven machines all of which have gooey pinch rollers. I've searched old threads and tried to contact a couple of the suggested people but without success. There is someone selling them in Germany but with postage it's £100! Anyone have any suggestions? I'm hoping to make at least two of the three work.

The name and email address above for David Durrant is the same as I have but the postal address I have is different. That said I last contacted him in 2012!

Around 2 years ago I purchased 2 new ones from a lady on eBay, at that time she had got a limited quantity manufactured.

I cannot easily see her on eBay now.

There's a very similar roller used on Akai machines. The metric bearing just needs opening up slightly.

A company, Russellind (US I think) manufactures just the rubber tyre for some popular 1/4" open reel tape machines such as Pioneer, Teac and Akai. They also manufacture a line of replacement rubber belts and idler tyres for tape machines. I found sellers of their products on a common online auction site.

I've had good success with the pinch roller tyres. The dimensions and the rubber quality and compliance/hardness seem well matched to the original OEM tyres, which is not always the case with aftermarket pinch roller rubber these days.

Sometimes the old tyre will not detach cleanly, leaving bits of rubber stuck fast to the boss. In these cases I've had a machinist lathe the old rubber off, leaving a clean surface to which the new tyre can be carefully glued. My machinist doesnt use the actual metal bearing for rotation while lathing but runs a close tolerance rod through the bearing for accurate concentricity and clamps the boss to the rotating lathe chuck, the proper way to do it I believe.

Here's a list of types available that I know of, with dimensions. In order the dimensions are probably OD, ID, width and (I guess) bearing bore diameter for the original boss.

ST-RT909 1.00 x 0.655 x 0.424 x 0.1725
ST-RT707 1.192 x 0.7837 x 0.425 x 0.204
ST- TASCAM-PR2 1.263 (32mm) x 0.945 (24mm) x 0.654 (16.6mm) x 0.159 (4mm)
ST-TEAC-PR3 1.27 x 0.66 (16.8mm) x 0.3937 (10mm) x 0.305 (7.75mm)
ST-TEAC 1.27 x 0.66 x 0.505 (13mm) x 0.305 (7.743 mm)
ST-AKAI-PR3 1.465 (37.2mm) x 0.9825 (24.96mm) x 0.426 (10.8mm) x 0.2413 (6.13mm)
ST-AKAI-PR2 1.575 (40mm) x 1.1535 (29.3mm) x 0.413 (10.5mm) x 0.2107 (5.35mm)
ST-AKAI-PR1 1.575 (40mm) x 1.2235 (31.1mm) x 0.423 ( 10.75mm) x 0.17575
ST-TEAC-PR2 1.58 (40.13mm) x 1.00 (25.4mm) x 0.590 (15mm) x 0.290

Thanks for the replies. I messaged Dave Durrant but didn't receive a reply. I'll try Russellind.

There is of course Terry Witt in USA. I have used him in the past. He is excellent. Unfortunately now though the cost of postage is very high, which is a considerable consideration.

There is also Lasse Hovde in Norway. He is mainly a Tandberg specialist, but it's worth enquiring about other makes too. I haven't had a lot of rollers refurbished by him, but I've been very happy with the ones he has done.
