Philips N1700 problem.
Hi all,
Has anyone had any experience with the Philips N1700 vcrs at all? I got hold of one a few weeks ago and after changing the belts I found that when I press the power button, the video hesd spins as it should but the capstan motor briefly spins for a second then nothing. When the head returns to its unlaced position the capstan motor briefly spins for a second again. Also the green power light and cassette compartment bulb are quite dim, so I'm guessing the power supply isn't working properly? Is this a known fault with these machines? The video head is fine as I've tested it in my working vcr. Also of note is that this VCR has been modified to record and playback at a slower speed, and has an extra clock display mounted on the lid of the VCR for extra timer recordings. It also has a remote control board and sensor fitted under the main flip up board on the right hand side for a pause and frame advance facility! Very odd! The modification instructions are with it and say that to play or record in normal speed the number 8 button on the tuner has to be pressed. I can take a photo of the modification instructions sheet and post it on here if anyone is curious. Many thanks, Rich. |

Re: Philips N1700 problem.
Exc. mods that have been done, I used to do the double speed one, I think it was one resistor in the capstan servo module. But your symptoms don't ring a bell. I'll dig out my manual.

Hi Tony!
I can get some pictures of the mods on Tuesday when I'm back home. I'll post them on here. I do know that number 8 on the tuner buttons has to be pressed to allow it to play and record in normal n1700 speed, and some other button has to be pressed to record in the slower speed. |

Re: Philips N1700 problem.
Hi Tony.
I've had a look at the mods and taken some photos for you. Notice the remote control board with what I think is an ultrasonic receiver. I have the remote too. The tape servo module has had the resistor removed and brown wire put in place of it, and in turn, the removed resistor has been put on the channel 8 button along with a 1.2Mohm 1/2w resistor. Cheers Rich. |

Re: Philips N1700 problem.
I think those mods were covered in Practical Television (as it was known then). One member here made an excellent keyword search application giving the issue and page number - maybe someone can recall where to find that app.

Re: Philips N1700 problem.
Apologies for what may be seen as being pedantic, but the magazine has been titled 'Television' since before the days of the 1700.

Re: Philips N1700 problem.
Here is a listing of various articles published in the Practical Television Magazine, which are N1700: 1978, April, page 298 long play vcrs ; 1978, May, page 37, battery back up ; 1979, April, page 298, modifications ; 1979, May, page 351 modifications ; 1979, November, page 23, video and audio outputs ; 1981, March, page 254, video and audio modifications ; 1983, April, page 296, speed conversion ; 1984, October, page 644, renovating ; 1984, December, page 76, timer modifications. The next listing is for the N1500: 1976, January, page 140, maintaining ; 1977, February, page 194, modifications ; 1979, March, page 268, renovating vcsr faults ; 1984, May, page 375, clock repair ; 1985, March, page 280, manual lace up. This is from my personal listings and is not from a commercially available app, and it runs in MS Works. There are also a lot of fault remedies in my listing but I have only covered articles here. Hope it is of some help in finding the mentioned article.

Re: Philips N1700 problem.
Nice listing there, very useful. Apparently 'Practical Television' became 'Television' in 1971.

Re: Philips N1700 problem.
I've made some progress with the N1700. I swapped over the main power board underneath the for a good one and that cured the problem it originally had when I got it. But now I've noticed that the video head speed is WAY too fast. It must have been like this before I changed the power board as I noted at the time that the head motor sounded too fast.
Is there any adjustment inside the VCR to bring down the head speed please? I carefully slowed it down using my finger at the top edge of the head and it actually gives a good picture, and the ultrasonic remote control works a treat too! Many thanks for the suggestions so far. Rich. |

Re: Philips N1700 problem.
I'd also be looking at the servo. Not familiar with this machine, but check TS201 BD437 is not s/c giving 33v across the motor (should be 16v)

Re: Philips N1700 problem.
Thanks for that info, both.
I've got the service manual but don't really know where to look. I've changed all of the plug in modules on the top flip up board with known good ones one by one but still no use. I'm a bit flummoxed. It's probably something so simple, I just haven't got the knowledge with these old beasts. |

Re: Philips N1700 problem.
What is the voltage across the motor?
