Re: Mis-heard and mis- pronunced connected with our hobby.
I trust the person who put you right pronounced it "Lerva" (Loewe being the German for Wolf), though I notice that a lot of foreign brands themselves Anglicise their names. One that immediately springs to mind is Braun which seems to be "Brawn" in Britain rather than (approximately) "Brown" and Kärcher as "Car-cher" rather than (again approximately) "care-her" - whose hard "h" is more like the "ch" in Loch.

I've heard fluorescent tube starters referred to as starter motors.

Re: Mis-heard and mis- pronunced connected with our hobby.
When I was a little lad I was hell-bent on taking things to pieces, as one did, and a kindly neighbour gave me an old wind-up gramophone to play with.
I came bounding into the house after I'd been fiddling, waving the thing with three flattened brass balls attached to spring steel and a worm drive on the end. 'Dad! I've got the minister out of it!'

Re: Mis-heard and mis- pronunced connected with our hobby.
The correct German pronunciation is "Lurva" (means lion). A bit like Lowenbrau is correctly pronounced "Lurvenbroi" (lion's brew). And Braun is correctly pronounced "brown", not "brorn"

Re: Mis-heard and mis- pronunced connected with our hobby.
I know of someone who had difficulty when phoning a certain German manufacturer of domestic appliances/power-tools and asking if they could supply new bushes for the motor in his hammer-drill.
Yes they could supply both Bushes and Brushes! Eventually it was established that my friend needed brushes not bushes. I also giggled profoundly when someone regularly talked about an "Osculator" rather than an oscillator. Osculation - derived from the latin Osculare - means kissing! |

One from the customers point of view.
I have more than once asked for 110 volt lamps and been told that 100 watts is close enough. |

My O-level German tells me that Lowenbräu (with umlaut) will be pronounced "Lurvenbroi".

Re: Mis-heard and mis- pronounced connected with our hobby.
I remember a prize draw type competition over 30 years ago to win a new TV set. As usual there was a question to answer thus making it legally not a pure game of chance and avoiding certain regulations.
Anyway the question was 'What does NICAM stand for?' The problem was that in the text of the competition it was given a 'Near Instantaneous Compounded Audio Multiplex' whereas I knew it be 'Near Instantaneous Companded Audio Multiplex'..... |

As an aside, Wolfram is the German for tungsten, which is why the chemical symbol is W. Of course, 'w' is pronounced 'v' in German. And 'v' is pronounce 'f'.

Apart from "Scarf" leads, the most grating to me was always the variations on Mitsubishi, Mistibushy probably being the most common.

In two different industries I've had to put up with people talking about Mat-ser-boo-shee.

You are indeed correct. Apologies for a senior moment.

Back in the '60s there were certain 'engineers' who spoke about Geranium semiconductors, maybe they were keen gardeners in their spare time . . .
Myself, I was guilty of calling the I.F. the Indeterminate Frequency until I was corrected by a friend . . . |

I bet they could supply two different kinds of brushes, bristle & carbon along with the bushes. Where's Corbett and Barker when you need them?
