Re: Mullard made for life
A very good watch, note the complete absence of safety goggles on the operatives throwing the pumped tubes about, love the RP diction of the narrator who probably hasn't the foggiest what cut off point and heater cathode insulation is!.

Excellent Film! What an amazing amount of expensive tooling was involved.

Re: Mullard made for life
Being the sad old git that I am I have a collection of these, Mullard, Thorn, GEC, they certainly bring bring back memories of the 50s and 60s. Trouble is I was around, some of the people talking in them crease me, whilst I'm supposed to be educated better queens English you rarely hear these days. INNIT!!!!!!!

Re: Mullard made for life
Wonderful to watch. Although automated to an extent, a lot of skill is still required by the various operatives. I wonder if there is anything left in British manufacturing these days that might equate?

It is a very good film, the BVWS DVDs also has another good one about colour tubes. The nearest we get today is "Inside the Factory", I quite like it.

Re: Mullard made for life
I find the automated machinery fascinating, particularly the machine used for joining the faceplate to the bowl, the way the gas jets move to the shape of the faceplate is amazing.
All the machines were built by the in house engineering team, long before the advent of CAD & computer controlled machines. Quality control was certainly impressive, it is amazing how well Mullard CRT's have stood the test of time, I have many sets 60+ years old that still have an excellent sharp & bright picture. Mark |

Re: Mullard made for life
Greg in post #3 is right about the narrator. Years ago we made a corporate video for a chemical company and the voice-over professional sounded so convincing, going on about things that were way over non-chemists' heads. He admitted to not having a clue what he was saying, but saying it with authority made it sound correct to an expert audience. Good trick!

Re: Mullard made for life
Wow, I love films like this. For some reason I assumed there was one big vacuum pump and all the tubes were connected to it. Never occurred to me that every tube had its own pump. So the ovens that the tubes were processed in, how hot did they get. Was it just hot or very hot as in200 degrees plus ? So many questions

That was a very enjoyable film! Sat and watched it on the Murphy V180C, complete with crappy Mazda CRM121 airbag!

Re: Anyone have a time machine I could borrow?
Yes, A wonderful story!. Almost as if you were looking into my dreams .
Although not the 30's, a very dear friend of mine, and my electronics tutor from about age 11 to 17, was recently shuffled into an old folks home. I was given free range in the "shed". Most of the "good" stuff had already gone, with chassis depleted of valves, "for geetar he said"!! :-0 I wonder how well a converter or mixer valve does in a mudguard, er I mean Fender? Joe |
