Copying, deleting files using DOS commands.
Long multiplication, division. Square roots by the method that looks a bit like long division. Developing a film. Cats cradle. Darning a sock (which I've not forgotten - I never knew it in first place). Lighting a Primus stove or tilley lamp. With reaction? |

Re: Forgotten Knowledge
Computer data storage can become unreadable long before a a written paper record.
I have some memory cards that even though I have a reader, my computer says " I have been updated so will ignore this input made by the older system". On the other hand, I have some "Admiralty Handbooks of Wireless Telegraphy" they are quite old but apart from the quaint use of jars for capacitor values, can still be read with ease. |

Re: Forgotten Knowledge
...Or just handwriting in general. I have to admit, I've been guilty of letting my handwriting go to pot in the fairly recent past so I make a point of staying in practice now. It's frightening how quickly neat handwriting can degenerate into scrawl.

Re: Forgotten Knowledge
The art of typing on a manual typewriter as opposed to a computer keyboard, including lighter keystrokes for full stops etc, the use of the 2-colour ribbon, carbon paper, Tipp-ex sheets/liquid and carcinogenic solvent to keep it thinned, the ting of the bell to tell you to return the carriage, squeezing in a letter by typing it with the space bar to shift the carriage by half a letter's width, underlining, an "@" key that was rarely used and so on.

Re: Forgotten Knowledge
Totally agree with all of them, David, the last one being a particularly sad sign of the times to which can be added concentrating on something for more than 3 minutes.
