BBC/Marconi thingy.
Just bought back a carload of old radio/test equipment from a workshop clearance of a long closed family electrical business.
All sorts of interesting stuff ranging from the 1920s upwards . First item that im posting here im not exactly sure what it is ,but im thinking it is some sort of radio receiving device . It has licensed by Marconi stamped on the back , and also the BBC Logo too but no numbers. The front has Ericsson of Beeston Notts on the front. Comes with interchangeable Broadcast band reaction coils x6 . Should have 3 valves on top (missing). Can anyone shed light please?

What a splendid set from the early days of radio, you lucky thing. All it needs is a clean and some valves and power. It used "bright emitter" valves (you can tell by the filament rheostats) I am guessing but I think "modern" 4 pin valves would fit and work.

Broadcast receiver made prior to 1927, when the British Broadcasting Company became the Corporation and the receiver levy was abolished.

A very nice find from the earliest days of broadcasting, looks fairly similar to this one but not identical (a couple of extra terminals on yours):

The model with the extra 'grid' terminals is there as a second image.

Yes, an Ericsson receiver and probably rather rare and valuable. I would think several hundred pounds at least. Great that this is in safe hands.

Re: BBC/Marconi thingy.
Im not sure if i should actually try and restore it to working order or leave it in "barn find" condition? either way its safe in my house , not in my workshop which is still dry but winter is coming soon..

Re: BBC/Marconi thingy.
As Merlin said, you may not have to do a lot other than light cleaning. The most vulnerable part(s) will be the intervalve transformer. Looks like there may just be one if it has an RF stage (I can see just one in the photo) . You may know but these often go open circuit. If so and you would like it working, they can be rewound, am sure Mike or Ed would advise. The amount of work depends on it's condition - if things are corroded or seized up it would be more problematic. You also need of course to know the best HT and LT voltages - that of course will depend on the valves you use. The filament rheostats will adjust LT but not have the same effect with dull emitter valves. Others will be able to advise better!

Re: BBC/Marconi thingy.
I'm just wondering what other goodies you found in that cache.
A nice Amplion horn speaker would go nicely with that wireless set.

Re: BBC/Marconi thingy.
I've got two friends who both have the 4 valve version of this set, I believe they each paid over £1000 for their sets. The intervalve transformers were OK in both sets. Its a pity one of the plug in coils is missing but other sets of 20's coils should work.

Re: BBC/Marconi thingy.
Early test gear does not seem to have much value, but is lovely ... I have a couple of 30's signal generators I paid very little for, but which are superbly built and should be useful, when I get around to them.
