Default HMV900 Cabinet

Hello all this is my first time on the forum so first of all I will introduce myself to all that do not know me.

My name is Nigel Taylor and been a member of the BVWS on and off for 30 years

As a restorer collector I must have had go at restoring most of the classic radios and jukeboxes at least once .

As the son of a TV engineer ( or so it say's on my birth cert ) I but I never bothered with TV much I think it was because as a young boy in the early 60's I was surrounded by them.

But as a collector of everything 1930's a TV of that era was always be on my list of wants.

These last few years I have been privileged to have become good friends with
what must be one of the countries most prolific TV collectors.

Having seen my restoring results on a couple of radios I got from him he agreed to sell me 2 pre war TV,s both in restoration work in progress.
I. Murphy A58V
2. HMV900
I would like to publicly thank him for making my dream come true.

Now we come on to what I have found today on the HMV900
I am only sympathetically restoring this due to its rarity .

Under the hinge to the top lid was a stamped number which is either 91 or 97
Under the mirror was a 91 so I think the 1 is not upright.
One way or the other it may be another way to date them,
I would be interested to see if the other 900 owners have a number on theirs.

Hi Nigel. I remebered a recent thread and put "HMV900 list" into the top search box which brought up [among other interesting info] Marky Marks thread from 30th December 2013 re his own set and 1936 dates.

https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...d.php?t=102362

Hope this helps. I've got a mirror lid set but it's post war so not really in your league.
Dave

Hi Nigel,

Welcome to the forum. As Dave has pointed out there are a few other early EMI televisions around. I would be happy to add your set's data to the list if you could let me have the data.

The TRF assembly normally has a stamped serial number near to the video and sync output terminals and the timebase chassis somewhere near the bottom.

Peter

Has anyone noticed the small, hinged inspection door in the right-hand side panel? It's visible in the third picture. I wonder if that's a later addition.

Nigel, welcome to the forum. That's a lovely set you've got there. Looking forward to hearing more about it in due course.

Hello Peter good to speak to you at last, I was aware of items you have written on the 900.
I have not got the chassis here at the moment as I want to complete the cabinet first,
however I will get the data for you first chance I get.
In the mean time the serial no. on the cabinet is 6149

Hello Ian glad you noticed the little hinged door I think its been added but very professionally, and a long while ago can't help wondering if its a HMV mod.

Hello all here are pics of my HMV 900 now resprayed this is looks tonight with the last coat straight out of the spray gun. Hopefully the colour meets everyone's approval. The pressure is really on with this one even though I have been restoring cabinets for 30 years .I am conscious not to
do any more to it than I have to .

Looks a good job Nigel.

What type of lacquers have you used? Have you included a toner? It's hard to see the actual finish from the photos, which are a little dark.

Hello Steve good to hear from you.
There are only 2 people I look up to for cabinet work that is you and Brian Woodward.

It must be 30 years now since Clive Mason and I restored a few sets for you under your scoring system. We had a lot to live up to to you Ha ha.

But it taught me a lot and so did Brian. But taking something from both of you and listening to comments from collectors I decided that unlike yourself when you restore someones prized heirloom, I like to try and put a 80 year patina back on again after I get the desired colour. I do use a toner .

I will get some better pics to you. I have made the decision not to remove all the dings
and try and leave it original.

Speak soon
Nigel

Hi Robin thanks for that give us a ring

Hi nigel,

I must say you've done a wonderful job to that cabinet. The inspection door does look to be a later addition. Certainly have not come across an example with this before.

Thanks Peter that means a lot I will be posting some more pics tomorrow
I have had to re felt everywhere including the top rim under the lid it was all moth eaten and under the top boards which is all back together now. Also
put the speaker back in. I could have removed the little door but I decided it was part of its history so be it.

Hi Nigel,

These are the part numbers and are applied in ink. They don't give any indication of age. The chassis numbers are stamped into the metalwork and appear to be sequential through the production span. They have four digits. Please see the example below.

Hi Nigel,

Your cabinet is looking very good. The little access door is an interesting mystery.

Thanks for your timebase chassis number. I've added your set to the list. Please tell me if your V8 socket is exposed or covered by a blanking plate. I would also like to add your TRF and sound chassis numbers if you can find them.

Regards,

Peter
