I wouldn't relish stripping the rest of the cabinet either. I like oiled finishes but if only the top is treated in this way there will be a marked contrast between it and the unstripped high gloss surfaces. It might be better to think in terms of staining the top and spraying with clear acrylic lacquer. To achieve a gloss surface this would require repeated rubbing down and respraying. Time consuming because of the need for each coat of acrylic to harden thoroughly between rubbing down. Fench polishing is another option of course but one I wouldn't consider in this instance.

Thank you for your replies, if I could point you to another thread I opened “Danish Oil v Tru Oil” . In the replies David completely stripped a BB cabinet and used Danish Oil with outstanding results, well worth a visit, it put my small effort to shame.

Only put on the minimum amount of coats to achieve an even sheen to the finish. Just one too many coats can result in something looking like a lumpy toffee apple.

Thank you Dave for your comments which I’ve noted. I have received a lot of advice in other posts on this subject which I am very grateful for.
Some more pictures and it is obvious that the Lid and Main Cabinet are a mismatch, so I’ve decided to work on the Main Cabinet. I know it will not look like the original finish but as a novice, on Cabinet work, I decided to have a go.

I'm about to start on restoring a BB cabinet, so I'd be very interested to hear how you get on!

(It's amazing how much time has suddenly become available for hobbies!)

I'm working on a nice Defiant from the late 1940s. The cabinet is horribly knocked about with some deep scratches and dings and will have to be stripped and re-done from bare wood.
However, it has that (to my mind) rather attractive finish where the edges of each panel are considerably darker than the centres. Pic attached.
Can anyone suggest how this could be achieved? To be honest, I've no idea how it was done originally. I'm tempted to experiment on some scrap plywood with a matt black paint spray...

Maybe the same way you do a sunburst finish. There are videos on Youtube.

I'd recommend that you search through posts made by 'Retired' (a.k.a. Colin of Huddersfield) on the general topic of cabinet repairs/restoration. Not only are these of enormous practical help, his style of writing makes for a thoroughly enjoyable read
I've gone down the same route with a Pye BB - I used paint stripper and fine sandpaper after which I applied Danish oil (two coats, six weeks/a fine sanding between them). It awaits the overhaul of the deck/amplifier (and has been so for the last four years! )
Best wishes
Guy

In addition to the comments from Guy I found looking at utube videos very helpful. Being a total novice on Cabinet restoration gathering as much information as possible is a must. When I first applied paint stripper on the lid I didn’t expect so much mess but I soon got the hang of it, and having a decent scrapper or two is very important.

Some pictures showing the cabinet after being stripped. I now need to sand it down.

One coat of Danish Oil applied, probably will do a second coat and the give it a spray of lacquer to give it a bit of a shine.

Not wise to spray lacquer on top of oil based finishes. The Danish Oil instructions will probably warn against such things as it's unlikely to adhere properly.

Just to clarify the previous post, I know that lacquer can successfully be applied to some oil based finishes once they are really well cured but personally I wouldn't recommend it for recently applied finishes. Better to stick to one or the other throughout ie, oil or lacquer.

Thank you for comments. I may have misunderstood some of the processes contained in other threads on Cabinet finishing. I thought it had been suggested that after I applied a couple of coats of Danish Oil I could then use a Polyurethane coating or a Clear Lacquer Acrylic spray. Did I misunderstand? Thanks.

I think you can, because one method of filling grain prior to finishing is to sand Danish oil to create an oil slurry of the oil and sawdust, and push that into the grain. It would have to be cured beyond doubt though before applying anything else on top.

Poly is a difficult lacquer to work with as it takes a hell of a time to cure properly, as Ive been finding out myself on another thread! Car lacquer as recommended to me on here is much simpler and cures a lot quicker, it doesn't quite create the lovely glass like finish poly does though

Thanks for feedback, yes I have been following yours and other post on the subject. I have decided to stick with Danish Oil so I’ll see how it turns out.

This is the cabinet after four coats of Danish Oil. I’m pleased with the result, but, I unfortunately broke the Hifi badge that goes on the front, so I’m on the look out for a replacement or something similar, I’m very annoyed with myself for being so clumsy
