Well I built it and it works - had a faulty 2112 RAM chip but, luckily a spare! Thanks Phil and everyone for your help and support - looks and feels lovely...

Well I thought I would round off the experience with a video documentary

https://youtu.be/nycewnGk3ro

and of course a website to provide a more concise set of information to save this thread...

Very nice job with both the video and the web site Tim, very, very well done.

Do I get a prize for observing that the heatsink on the PSU is almost certainly one from a Spectrum?

On the website, I believe I recognise myself as the northern forum member with the distinctly lukewarm attitude towards switch-input systems.

One thing which I hope will happen is that someone, somewhere, with a surviving Scrumpi III will stumble across your site and make themselves known to you.

Thanks - I was pleased with how they turned out - no prizes but, well spotted I had a few from dead Spectrums BITD in my hardware box - seemed appropriate really.

Consider your prize being immortalised with a quote on scrumpi.uk - glad you liked it

As you say that is my main hope that we will gets someone find one - to get the EPROM contents would a real win.

We seem to know a lot about John Miller-Kirkpatrick but was he just a one-man band? There's no possibility that there are some colleagues from Bywood who are still around?

From reading the article in The Register I got the impression he ran the company with his wife, it also mentions his estate as helping with the article. Perhaps now we have a website we might be able to convince them to give us some access to his records? I will re-read it and see if there is any info that might lead to some contact or other.
Got my laptop at last, so thats going to help!!

Nice to have you back, you've been uncharacteristically quiet lately.

I've been lurking, reading the posts but not really had much to contribute at the moment. Also the return of my laptop(s) has triggered a relapse of my Minecraft addiction - and taken away my excuse to ignore the growing to-do list of things I need to sort out getting my life back in order! I've now moved back to Essex to be nearer family (not that I'm seeing much more of them until the CV-19 restrictions ease off) and squaring myself to the battle to re-house myself and hopefully get back to gainful employment at some point!

So not much happening then... Good luck on the house and job hunting.

On the Bywood issue like you I got the distinct impression it was just him and his Wife as it mentions her getting a bookkeeping job elsewhere when he became sick again. I was sure I had dropped Tony an email at the Register to see if he would contact JMK's daughters who provided him with the material in case they had more significant items stashed somewhere (and even just to see the other side of the promotional leaflet for the SCRUMPI 3) but, I cannot find it in my sent and I obviously never got a reply. I did do some research on that surname in the area in phone books etc but, felt that was perhaps getting a little too excessive...

Might be worth trying again, point to the new website as he might even get an article out of it! If that happens it might even get our project to other eyes that have information...

Maybe go about it a different way, try to get one of the local (to Bywood's original location) papers interested in running a story about their largely unsung local tech hero, drawing parallels between him and Sinclair but pointing out that he was technically half a year or a year ahead. You could offer to provide images of your replica and any other pertinent information you may already have.

I take it you haven't been able to get back into your man-cave of bits and pieces just yet, Ian?

Nope, its all in a storage unit and I'm not allowed out of the care home in case i bring back the human malware with me. If I try and persuade someone else to retrieve some stuff I have the problem nobody knows what to look for!

Karen: Thanks! TBH Im just glad to be alive, it was touch & go for a while.

just like the one from MIKE.

Nice one Phil - looks very professional in that case and a lovely way to display it - I assume the socket on the side is a bus expansion of some kind? I will add one of the pictures to the website for completeness.

That's probably the most professional looking SCRUMPI 1 -ever- built. I assume the white enclosure it is fitted in is 3D-printed.
