Pye P128B Slim six noob restoration.
Hello,
I have just been given the above radio from a house clearance via the Freegle reuse groups. I think this will be a nice winter evening project for me once I get the current house DIY done, even my wife likes the look of it so once its going (fingers crossed) it will likely end up on the sideboard. It has been many years since I did something like this, so this one being just some transistors and capacitors I should be able to get on with quite well. Anyway, I need to plan what Im going to do with it and to get some parts in, I even need to dig out the old avo8 and get that cleaned up & working first. The caps, rather than just replace them - am I able to put the replacement inside the existing ones to maintain the look? ISTR I have done this before to some wax ones, but never old electrolytics. Any recommendations on where to get the transistors and caps from? Also the brass dial on the front, it has some darker what look like corroded patches, how can I clean these up please? Is brasso wadding OK to use or should I try something else? (does this dial come off easily?) The tuning knob is clearly the wrong one, any suggestions where I may find something that looks more like the volume one? Also the tuning cord has snapped so I need to redo that, I actually have some of that in a draw somewhere, now all I have to do is remember where I put it 30 years ago. Many thanks in advance for any advice. Matty in Rossendale. p.s. I have the schematic. |

Where can I get transistors and caps from?
Hi Matty, hopefully the transistors will be ok, heat on the leads when soldering will kill them, but be aware these Newmarket leads seem to snap where they enter the transistor if you so much as look at them. As for re-stuffing caps it may be possible, maybe cut old cap in half, clean out old remains, new caps are a lot smaller once fitted the joint could be covered with a label. Looking at the circuit there are only three electrolytic caps in there. John.

There's a good chance a radio such as this will Just Work, with just a squirt of Servisol on the wave-change switch, volume control and battery contacts.

Re: Pye P128B Slim six noob restoration.
OK, So winter came early and I had some time tonight.
Dissasembled it for cleaning as I want to ensure its going to look good before I try the electronics. I have removed the dial and stuck it into some kingspan so I can polish it - its come up nicely with brasso wadding & elbow grease. The case I have been cleaning with soapy water, earbuds and the wifes toothbrush. Although it still seems to have a layer of grime on it, any suggestions on a houshold cleaner I can use? The brown painted front rim - although this has cleaned up I'm wondering if I should repaint it - is fo any suggestions what to use? Back to the dial, were these things coated with lacquer - should I do that after polishing it or just leave it polished? I'm keen to get this one done then I can get stuck into a P75 I also have. The manufacturer's service data shows the tuning cord:

The red/yellow/black Plessey electrolytics will have to go, but other than that it'll probably be OK.

Which is why we discourage txt spk on here. NVM does mean non volatile memory in our world.

My apologies, I'm more used to chatting to younger folk that play Minecraft on a discord server these days.
Even I don't understand some of their language. |

Re: Pye P128B Slim six noob restoration.
I would recommend cleaning the dial with meths or another alcohol to degrease and then spraying with a clear lacquer. Dont worry if it looks cloudy when the laquer is wet it should dry clear. Try and spray it in a dust free space, if you can, or at least put a sort of cover over to help minimise dust settling on it whilst drying.
You could re-black the dial markings prior to cleaning with meths. Mike |

Re: Pye P128B Slim six noob restoration.
Thanks Mike,
I have what would you reccomend to black the markings with? a small tub of enamel paint and a fine brush perhaps? Although if I can wash the white residue from the cleaner off they seem quite black for the most part, refreshing them would be better though. I have found a small bottle of "finishing oil" in the oak sideboard that was used for that, this seems to have given the wood a lustre in the patch I tried. |
