Apprentice in the 40's !
Going on from the other thread I started my app in 1948 at Walters Electrical Co in Westbourne Park, London.
Overhead belts to machines driven by a gas engine as there was no incoming electrical supply to the premises. Can anyone go back further?

Hi Albert, I certainly can't beat that, my apprenticeship was mid 1970's. You've seen a few changes. The transistor was just being developed when you started. I guess there was plenty of surplus equipment available to play with as well!

Re: Apprentice in the 40's !
Until 3 weeks ago my now late Dad could have beaten you - he was apprenticed at Hall Telephones Willesden at the beginning of the war - later he went into the R.E.M.E.
One of the things he was involved with early on was outfitting the factory with new fluorescent light fittings. Much later, around 1966 after many other jobs he was back at the Willesden factor, then Elliot Automation, working on Card readers. While he was there they replaced the light fittings he had helped install all those years ago so he bought one home -it`s still in his garage. |

Lisle St, Soho ! That rings a bell, plenty of shops selling a plethora of Ex Gov Radio, 19 sets by the lorry load at £4 -19/6d I recall.

Lisle Street and Little Newport Street as I remember.
Think my biggest purchase was an RF26 unit as it was mostly small components as a teenager.
