Default Film buff rescues more than 20,000 VHS tapes set for dump

He runs the last video-rental shop in the UK, apparently...

I think there was mention of the guy and his video-store in a thread here a couple of years back but can't find it.

Ah yes , i read that too, very commendable trying to save video media especially stuff that was never released on dvd.
I have a few hundred pre recorded Video tapes from various formats including pre certificate stuff which is actually very collectable.
I think i also read somewhere that there is one last Blockbuster video store left on the planet in the USA ?

He's a bit of a hero! Incidentally I have a pre-certificate VHS tape which I tried to sell, ('time code in vision' type) but it raised no interest at all.

Disney's original version of "Fantasia" was only issued on VHS. This was down to legal action by Stokovsky, who successfully demonstrated that his contract with Disney only covered use of the musical performance in a film for showing in theatres, and did not cover selling copies of the film to the public.

I remember a newspaper report of a video shop that was successfully prosecuted for renting out pre-certificate videos. They were Betamax ones that had never been reissued after the law changed.

The question arises is what state are the tapes in. It looks like they were stored in a damp shed.

The ones using whale oil tend to be OK.
Later ones made with more readily available oils are not so long-lasting.
