Conversion / calculator software - DOS
99% of my computer usage in my business (CAD, DTP, Word) is still in DOS - (Windows is a total overkill!)
I have for many years relied on 'Universal Calculator' (Atlantic Coast Software) for on-the-fly quick conversions (ft/sec to mph or kph; fahrenheit to centigrade; cubic inches to litre etc). It was brilliant DOS software. Unfortunately my program master disc has now died and copying the program from one PC onto a floppy doesn't work anymore (it used to, but it appears there is a time limit!). Does anyone have a spare working copy of this program or know of an equivalent program which works under DOS? I believe there is 'Convert' - a free download which works under Windows, but not DOS. Either way, I needs it to be on 3-1/2" floppy, not a CD. I'm no good at downloading programs from the internet! Please PM me! Thanks in advance Barry |

Hi Barry,
Are you aware that Google can perform unit conversions? Here's a quick example. More on Google's extended features here. It's what I tend to use for unit conversions and calculations as there's always a browser running on a nearby computer. Regards, Kat |

Thanks Kat,
This is for purely standalone DOS PCs/laptops NOT connected to the Internet! I should have made it clearer! I still live happily in the Luddite dark ages when it comes to computers for business use. Barry |

Re: Conversion / calculator software - DOS
Hello,
On this page there is a free 'Universal Converter' (amongst several others) which will run from a floppy disk. Might be worth a look? Or you could get a copy made by some helpful person! http://www.bttr-software.de/freesoft/calc.htm Michael Last edited by yesnaby; 26th Jul 2010 at 9:07 pm. |

Re: Conversion / calculator software - DOS
Assuming you have some or other C compiler for DOS, see if you can get GNU units to build under it. (It seems pretty undemanding, and there's a Makefile.dos in the source tarball.)

Thanks 'Red to Black' and 'Yesanby' - that's the one!! All the old favourite DOS programs - and they work!
Mightily grateful to you. Barry |
