Default Help required with a Toshiba T1000 battery

Can anybody help me with instructions and components to make a replacement battery pack for a Toshiba T1000 laptop?

The original pack consists of 4 x Varta RSH1.4 (KRH 23/43) NiCads rated at 1.2v and 140mA. These seem difficult to obtain.

Can anybody recommend an alternative NiCad, that will still fit into the dimensions taken up by the existing pack and provide the correct output?

Thank-you.

Paul.

Hi Paul,

What are the dimensions of the original NiCds? Can you post a pic of them?

Nick.

No pictures at the moment, but here are the specs:

42.2mm x 23mm x approx 92mm (4 batteries make the pack)

CPC do a range of Nicad and NiMh batteries in sizes other than the standard AA, C & D sizes. They may have one that is similar in size. Th chances are that the capacity will be greater than the original so it may need a longer charge time.

Hi Paul, I think the size is known as Sub C or CS cells. They are usually tagged for making up battery packs.
RS list these; http://uk.rs-online.com/web/search/s...77927&x=30&y=6 which look close to your originals.

Thanks for the RS link. That looks like it's exactly what I need. Now I just need to wait for some spare cash to make the purchase.

http://www.strikalite.co.uk/ are incredibly helpful, and reasonably priced. They will make up custom NiCd or NiMH battery packs to your spec, including welding of cells and shrink-wrapping. This HAS to be easier (and safer) than trying to solder tagged cells into a pack.
No connection by the way - just a long-standing company on my "very useful" list!

Default Help required with a Toshiba T1000 battery (Update)

I got my dad to solder some standard 'C' size rechargable batteries rated at 2600mAh in a 4 pack, and placed them in the Toshiba instead.

They wouldn't fit in the plastic battery holder, instead they are duck-taped together to form a 4 pack. Dad said the soldering was decidedly dicey, but they seem to work a treat.

I'm very happy to get my T1000 running again.

I could probably dig out an old battery pack of sub Cs that you could break up and resolder. No warranties (express, implied or anything else for that matter), but I have had some use out of them myself for rebatterying dustbusters

Best to give the pack a charge from a bench psu and look for any cells that seem to hold a voltage, break them out (be careful not to short any cells in this process) and try an individual cell discharge test to see what capacity is left!

Let me know if you're interested.....
