So far the construction of the cabinet has been easy. Now comes the part where great care must be exercised, making the hole in the right side for the pre-set controls. Can't mess this up so a template will be made to guide the cutting tools. I'm using the measurements supplied by Adrian, the only difference being the reference is from the rear edge of the cabinet instead of the front. This because of the differences in the method of making and presenting the front surround pieces.

If you want any more measurements I can take them in the morning, that is not that difficult for me as I can pull the Knobs and measure from where ever you want.

Hi Adrian,
I'll hold back on cutting out the aperture for the side controls until the measurement from the bottom rear edge of the right side panel to the rear edge of the aperture is determined.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi Adrian,
Your measurements proved that the figures shown in post #41 needed to be altered by 3mm away from the front edge of the cabinet.
The rear cabinet edge to the rear edge of the controls aperture was 330mm, the corrected figure is now 227mm.
Slight alterations to the position of the bottom edge and height of the aperture.
Now I can go ahead and make the template.

I think I would let John add the last holesĀ¬

When you have the plywood screen surround and the safety glass etc who knows how much wiggle room you need. In mine the plastic surround is a seat for the CRT so that is my limit of forward movement for the chassis. The hole in the side of mine also allows for approx 5 or 6mm side to side movement in the piece of bakelite surround.

Of course John can sit the chassis to suit the side hole and the screen surround can move, I can not picture how it is fitted at the moment.

If it was not for lock down and all this, you could have had my TV there to work from.

The original plastic CRT mask is missing so the plan is to make new one one from very thin plywood. The width of the panel is known but the vertical position is unknown until the chassis is fitted in the cabinet. For that reason the height measurement will be greater than is required so that John can trim it to fit.
The attachment gives the dimensions of the faceplate of the Brimar C14BM and C14FM 14" CRTs. The C14FM is a direct equivalent to the Mullard MW36-24 and MW36-44. The dimensions of these tubes was determined by the developer in America in 1950.
The second attachment shows a mask made for a 12" GEC model BT5144. The CRT has a round flat faceplate.

Interesting I just searched through Frank Pocknets data sheets get the Brimar C14FM had a different heater voltage? I guess it would mean a drop in the ballast resistor.

I forgot about that, the Brimar C14FM has a 12.6V 0.3amp heater. The Mullard tubes have 6.3V heaters. Up to 1961 all Ferguson TVs were equipped with Mullard CRTs. After '61 you'd occasionally see Brimar tubes in certain models.
The information for the CRT dimensions came from the No.6 Brimar valves and teletubes book.

The side controls aperture was cut out yesterday. The first picture shows the template used to guide the hole cutter.
The assembly of the cabinet is almost complete, just the loudspeaker baffle assembly to do next.
Need to determine the position of the holes for the front controls.

The aperture for the elliptical loudspeaker was cut out yesterday. This was achieved by making three holes in the baffle board, a 75mm centre hole and 40mm holes each side. The final shape can be seen in the attached pictures.
The 25mm holes for the two front controls were also cut out.

The wood strip under the loudspeaker baffle was made today. This part serves to raise up the cabinet floor up 22mm from the table.
Two blocks will be made for the rear of the cabinet. Good under chassis ventilation is assured. One of the reasons why these complex receivers were so reliable.

That looks really good.

I hope you've somewhere warmer to work than I do - which is why I'm here looking at what you've been doing, rather than doing much myself!

Hi Mark,
The workshop is very cold in winter and for the forty-eight years I've been in the place there's been talk about moving the workshop into the middle of the premises and every year nothing gets done.
Spring, summer and autumn comes along and everything is fine again.
In winter the best time to do any work is in the evening which is when most of the work on the cabinet was done.
The mask for the CRT will be the next part to be made. The original plastic mask was lost so a simple push-through presentation will be the ideal solution.

Attachment shows the chassis of the model 992T installed in a cabinet that has the same dimensions as the cabinet which houses the slightly larger 991T chassis.

That is interesting David. The 992T is the service area model but the cabinet is probably the same as the 991T. I must admit i thought the chassis were the same size. John.

Hi John,
I would have thought that all the 991T and 992T series of televisions would have shared same chassis metalwork. But it does seem the 992T chassis is slightly smaller than the much more complex 991T fringe area receiver.
The 992T rear controls have extensions to permit adjustment when the back cover is in place.

For ease of CRT screen cleaning the design of the original 991T cabinet permitted removal of the loudspeaker baffle, all that was required to do this was removal of two 2BA screws and washers.
The same facility has been replicated in the new cabinet. I was fortunate to find two cavity nuts, if that's the name for these parts, see second attachment.
Two 6.5mm holes have been drilled into the cabinet floor and the salvaged parts are now fitted in place.

They're called captive nuts:
