Intel Celeron wrong clock speed.
Not sure if this is classed as vintage, Intel Celeron 2.2ghz in an ASUS motherboard.
Randomly when powering up, the computer fails to start the operating system and instead, launches the BIOS screen as shown. The processor is a celeron 2.2ghz so the figures, by my reckoning, are right anyway. If I press F10 and save and exit, it boots ok and runs. But 50% of the time, when I switch it on, I get this screen again. I've changed the BIOS battery just in case. Any ideas if I'm doing something wrong?

Change the CMOS battery again, as being new is no guarantee - flat new ones are VERY common.
Reseat the CPU (with new thermal paste) and the RAM modules, then load the BIOS defaults and save them. Oh, and try another keyboard as well. |

Re: Intel Celeron wrong clock speed.
Is the motherboard one of those that suffered from bad electrolytics?
Only other thing I can think of is the area in BIOS where the config is stored is flakey not holding its data.

Re: Intel Celeron wrong clock speed.
I agree, tired electrolytics are likely to be the explanation.
Given the age of this system, there's probably no point in trying to fix the fault unless you want to do it as an exercise. You will be able to find similar spec machines FOC or nearly so. |

Re: Intel Celeron wrong clock speed.
Its not uncommon to end up at the BIOS screen if there is no bootable device.
If that's the case, I would be looking for an intermittent drive / sata / pata as well. dc |

Re: Intel Celeron wrong clock speed.
You might have to set the clock speed via jumpers on the motherboard. Can you find a manual for your MB?

Re: Intel Celeron wrong clock speed.
Given that this seems to be a new problem which has occurred without any such jumpers being moved from their original positions, and the CPU speed settings seem to be 'soft settable' rather than by links or switches (post #1) I would not expect that to be the problem in this case.
