Default Kenwood TS-850S value?

Hi, i am selling some ham radios for the widow of a silent key. Could anyone please tell me the value of Kenwood TS850S, R5000, AT230. If this post is not allowed, please delete. Cheers, Malc.

I think the answer will depend a lot on how you sell it. Offering equipment to radio dealers will yield shockingly low offers. At the other end of the spectrum, selling privately will probably get the best money. Selling valuable equipment on online sites could get a good price but there are risks.

Have a look at the auction sites, but be sure to look at completed sales. Those with 'buy it now' prices are often wildly optimistic, pitching prices high so that the seller doesn't fear that it could have been bettered if he'd only waited for an auction period to complete.

Have a look at second-hand sales listings from the remaining specialist amateur radio dealers to get another perspective. These selling prices will be higher than you can expect to get because there is an assumed benefit maybe a warranty, but also in some degree of 'come back' if it's not as described.

For the transceiver and possibly the receiver, you'll need to know what options have been fitted. Optional filters were very expensive, and they're not available now, so their presence or lack has a strong influence on second-hand prices. Amateurs tend to keep the original heavy-wall cardboard box with all the fitted polystyrene blocks, bags etc that once protected it on its journey from Japan. If the widow has these in the attic, then the presence of them also affects price. They are good for moving the thing at any time in future.

Once you've got an idea of price, then advertise it in your local clubs. A local sale with someone coming to collect avoids all the trouble of having to pack the things to withstand couriers. If possible, have it on power for the potential buyer to try it out. Having a dummy load to allow the transmitter to be run up off air would be good.

In the case of a silent key sale, don't forget all the small accessories and cables, these can retain their value rather well and either be very sellable, or be good enablers for the sale of the major items. Some may help a lot to allow someone to see a set on power and running before sale.

There haven't been radio rallies for the past couple of years so eveyone's out of practice at seeing offered gear and its prices. There used to be sales columns at the back of Radcom. They're still there but they've shrunk to a tiny fraction of what they once were so the chances of finding those specific items for a guide is not high.

With the options known, you could ask a couple of amateur radio dealers what they would offer. This will set the low end of what you should expect to get. If you find any completed auctions thiese will be a guide to what the top end would be.

Many thanks for your replies. There is also a Yaesu FT221R and a Trio TS530SP.

Testing and verifying that the radio is fully functional will get you top price too. If clean and polished that will add value to the sale.
If from a smokers home, the value will be considerably lower, based on what I see here.
