You say you could not get a multimeter, one is essential to "see" what is going on in a circuit or swich. They are real cheap to buy especialy a basic "Analogue Multimeter" £4 or less woud be good enough for what you are repairing. Digital meters from around £10. Buy the cheapest if you dont intend using it much. Plenty on the internet on how to use it, all you need to know about for now is "resistance" and do not plug it in, Plugging it in and voltage readings may not be needed on this project.
Good luck. John.

I think AJS has found the problem in post #18. The way the lamps have been re-wired has put them in series with the kettle element.

Gordon,

I think David has got it! To summarise, this is how the kettle and lights should be connected:
Both neutral light terminals and kettle connector go to mains lead neutral. All these leads are black.

The live (yellow) light terminals go to the terminal on the smaller (RH) switch; this is the terminal which is linked to another terminal on the switch.

The live (yellow) kettle connector is connected to the kettle switch (the one with three connections) via terminal strip on the platform.

If you want to, there's no problem with connecting the lights in series.

Mike's photo isn't the absolute clearest here but I think Goblin must have used the neutral wire between the two lampholders to link the "mains" and "kettle" terminal blocks, in a sort of daisy-chain configuration (which is exactly how I would have done it, under the circumstances); and whoever rewired the lamps in series has (perhaps inadvertently; if they never used the tea making function, they would never notice anything amiss) broken this connection.

If you can draw out a wiring diagram based on how your Teasmade is actually wired, with the terminal blocks for mains, kettle and clock, the switches and the lampholders and all interconnections, we can hopefully get a solution together.

I've attached one of your photos. If you remove that blue connector and put the yellow wire in lamp holder connector with the yellow wire (yellow arrow) and the black wire to either one of the connections with the black arrows (the upper one looks most likely to be it's original position), I think it will work.

For completeness, here's what the wiring should look like:

Guys,

I'll definitely try David's suggestion with rewiring the the black and the yellow cable with the blue connector. See what happens then.

Also, (and if above should fail), I'll be glad to draw out a wiring diagram of the actual wiring on my teasmade. That would indeed help to work out a solution together.

And if all fails, I'd be all too happy to rewire the whole thing according to Mike's diagram (with corrections to come).
