Default It's DAT again!

Yes folks it's DAT time again or put another way, Dangerous Adapter Time.

Once again it is the time of year to pull down from the loft all those Christmas decorations that seem to have been around for ever. You know what I mean. All those 50+ year old sets of 'Fairy' 'Gnome' 'Snowmen' and other dodgy looking characters from our childhood that would now be considered very non PC by the miserable brigade.

They of course would not be complete without the fascinating array of BC double and triple adapters, Pifco interference generating thermal flashers and the usual dodgy wiring. What fun!

This year it will be a Ferranti Christmas with my restored 17T4 taking pride of place in the living room.

From a bright but very cold West Sussex I would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a safe and healthy New Year. Regards, John.

Nice! I love this stuff, as a collector of vintage christmas lights I enjoy these threads.

That lot would soon teach our 15-month-old son not to stick his fingers in electrical things...

We had some lights as a child made of China which were plugged into a clix bayonet type connector.

I well remember the Pifco Starlights in pic 1. Every year my dad would have to take them into work to get the resident electrician to solder up at least one connection that had come adrift whilst in storage. We also had the thermal flasher unit too. Thanks for sharing the pics.

This could be a scene from Christmas 1953. There are clues that all is not what it seems..
Can you spot them? John.

Mince pies in a box. Back in the fifties everybody would have made their own, if they could get the fruit / mincemeat?

The black object at the right hand end of the dresser shelf looks modern.

Correct Duncan. Yes Graham but what are the black boxes? No not boxes of Terry's Spartan chocolates.
Strangely the most obvious have not been noticed. Remember this is '1953'. John.

Is the test card on the telly not too modern for 1953?

Not being a TV person, I'll guess that the test card is wrong for the year.

I thought Test Card C was introduced in 1948 and was still in use in 1953.

Surely in 1953, rather than displaying a picture, the TV would be waiting for the repairman to come and fix it!
Also, were rectangular CRT's available that big in 1953?
Cheers

It's not the one in the photo, but Ekco were making a console TV with a 16" flat screen tube at that time that promised "photographic quality" : see the attached scan of their 1952 TV leaflet.

Some clever ones here but your missing something.

Yes, Mince pies would have been home made. Mr Kipling was still filling a nappy.
Test card is OK. Test card 'C' introduced in 1948.
Nick, It is an Ekco..VERY reliable. [Three link chassis]
The 16" model was the TC178. 16" metal cone tube. My TC196 has the same chassis but with a 15" circular tube. Released early 1953.

Good efforts! John.

Is the leather-look padded chair a bit too modern?

I wondered about that, but I didn't want to insult the OP's tastes.

There are probably a lot of anachronisms in the picture, but the definition is not high enough to spot them.

How about the screw-topped bottle? A cork would have been more common, I think, but not sure if screw caps were around.

Edit: Apparently they were available for a long time before the '50s, but perhaps not so commonly used for beverages.

The reflection of the mobile phone flash-LED is the most obvious one to me
