Smile Argus

Today I've been given this lovely tv set. Now where is my 405 converter?

Hi Roland, it could probably be made to work on 625 without a converter as it is an electrostatic tube; a component value change in the TB should do this

That is true... I've had mine running at 625. Now it's adjusted so it will display anything between 120 and 240-lines and has been fitted with a 'flowerpot' magnifier. The other picture shows it working - not perfectly at the top of the picture - on 405-lines.

Green trace, electrostatic deflection, right size, side contact base.... VCR97! I guess there's no prize.

Envious.

Would a change of the video detector not also be needed for 625 lines?, unless taking of comp video in?

Good guess David, though actually mine has a VCR517. Originally, when built in 1990, it sported a CV2810, with a (two-layer) short-persistence violet backing a long persistence greenish phosphor. Resulting in plausible black-and-white as per pic. Sadly, this tube expired and I never found another one as good...

As for 625 operation, I ran mine from baseband through a standard positive-modulation David Looser System A modulator. I did fit a 3.5 MHz sound trap to the video input feed though...

Yes the set is very nicely built! I've got also some of these practical TV booklets and two spare CRT's with it. I've heard that there were green long persistence versions and a blueish/white kind of colour. I wonder what colours these CRTs have. I have to check the models.

I agree that the set could be pushed to 625 lines, but it has AM sound. So I think I have to find my 405 line converter. I've had a Bush TV22 once, but then I ran into the Bush TV22F (this is the 625 line version). So I kept the F version and sold the 405 line version. But I must have that converter somewhere...

Checked: The spare tubes are VCR97 and VCR517C

Regards, Roland
