Default What are these fasteners called?

They were used to attach larger components such as variable-capacitors and IFTs to chassis in a lot of gear during WWII and immediately after.

Basically - a length of rod with one end threaded, the other end flattened, and a hole drilled through the flat bit. A nut/bolt goes through the hole to attach the 'thing' to the capacitor/IFT, the threaded end goes through a hole in the chassis and is held in place with a nut.

I know exactly what you mean, but I don't ever recall this item having a specific name!

Were they ever available as a stand-alone component or only as part of an IFT or whatever?

The ones that were a piece of metal with a slot to take the IF can and either a male or female thread at the other end to attach to the chassis were called Clevises.

The single-sided ones, I've never heard a specific name for.

I've found them in an old Home Radio (Mitcham) catalogue where they are called 'Eyebolts'. But that means something rather different to me...

Yes, an Eyebolt is something different to me too.

The nearest I've managed to identify so far as a name for them is "spade bolts".

Now, where do I buy them in quantities of less-than-10,000 ??

The McMaster-Carr catalogue has this sort of fastener with a through hole though the flattened section, called "hanger bolts" or "spade bolts": screen shot from their web site attached. They also do simlar items with female threads.

P.S. when looking on-line for the McMaster web site, one of the items that came up first was an outfit called raptorsupplies.co.uk that says it can get items by quoting the mcmaster part numbers, with no minimum order, but they might be trade only. The swingeing penalties imposed by the US authorities for failing to comply with the US's strict export formalities post 9/11, led to McMaster-Carr ceasing to supply parts to new overseas customers. When I needed some unobtainium-in-the- UK fasteners a few years ago, I had to get a contact in the US to buy them and post them to me.

Yes that's the thing - spade bolt!

Will have to do some serious searching - I need ones about 1.5cm long and with a hole that will nicely take a 6BA nut/bolt or similar. They're for mounting a couple of the 'classic' 1940s-era variable capacitors for an ATU.

I think those hanger bolts are for hanging stuff off ceilings on wires, they're used in lighting installations. (and for installing suspended ceilings!) .Rather bigger than the things on IF transformer cans! I would imagine the maker of the IF coil would make them in the next room in the factory that make the cans and probably had their own name, eg threaded hold-me-down, a nutted riv-piece or a simple eye stud, as per link below

Check R/C hobby shops, that sort of thing used to be around some years ago, but not having been in a hobby shop (or looked in an online one) in a long time, I have no idea what may still be available.

Would they be hard to fabricate? I recall that on some of the straps for holding down block capacitors, the flat strap is inserted into a slot cut into a short length of 4BA studding, probably then brazed, and then plated over. Depending on how much force they need to withstand, soft-soldering may be adequate?

They shouldn't be hard to fabricate - depending on how pretty you want them to look - grab a length of brass rod, pound the living daylights out of one section to flatten it (leaving a suitable length of rod either side of this area), cut to length, drill hole in flattened bit and thread remaining round bit of rod

You may or may not need to anneal the part afterwards - depends how hard you need it..

Could squeeze the end in a big vice and then file the marks out of it.

I'd use threaded brass rod and squeeze one end in the vice. A couple of bits of hard angle held in the vice jaws will minimise marking.

6 or 4 BA threaded rod, heat end, hammer the end to flatten and drill.
