Default BASF tape clips

I now have a few of these tape clips, presumably to stop tape unraveling when fitted to reel to reel spools. Some were included in BASF reel splicing kits and these shown here were available separately.

3M made their own version (picture 3) and they are obvious as to how they hold the end of the tape on the reel.

For the life of me how do you use the BASF ones please? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Peter

Do they perhaps slide into the reel's radial slot (where the free end of the leader is threaded)?

Longer side goes on reel flange. Pull the leader end between the two smaller tabs.

Thanks for the suggestions chaps, I’ll give it a try and let you know. One of those things that is quite hard to describe on paper.

To be honest, unless you have a very full reel, these clips tend to be more trouble than they're worth. They would have been useful years ago to prevent unwinding /slack when people sent tapes through the post.

I just pull the leader down through a side slot enough to hold it between the flange and tape.

Quite a few tape spools I have encountered do not have the side slots.

I had (have somewhere?) some of the 3M ones, not very keen as it`s easy to damage imperfectly wound tape.

Well, I managed to find a contemporary BASF spool and as Ben suggested my picture shows how they can be fitted. Not too easy to put the tape through the clip though. However this does remind us that a certain dexterity is required to use a reel to reel! Incidentally this is a purchased tape, I have never used the slot to secure the tape. I always wrap the end around the hub and allow friction to hold it.

Thanks again all,

Peter

Ah, thanks Peter. That’s what I was trying to describe (I think!)

Picture 3 looks the same as the Scotch ones I found https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...hp?t=177306the

I thought that’s what you meant as well!

David: “Scotch” is/was a trademark of 3M. Most of their reel to reel products were sold under the “Scotch” name. So your clips are the same.

Yes Peter, I did see the "3M Company" logo on attachment 4 of my linked Thread.

You're right, I'm just thinking of the smaller plastic ones. For sure the large 10 inch aluminium ones don't have side slots.

I was not thinking about metal spools, I do have some 5 3/4" & 7" plastic spools that do not have the side/radial slots.
