I've always understood that it was liquid paraffin, but the Science Museum website just says oil or water: https://collection.sciencemuseum.org...agnifying-lens

Hi Andy, I've exchanged a few messages with the owner with a view to rescuing it! If I am able to get it, and then happen to decide its not for me then I'll happily pass it on to you. John its located in Hythe so I suspect quite an impressive aerial would have been required! The magnifier does indeed look ghastly!
