Default Who Uses a B&W Set as their ONLY Television?

I was cold called today by Vicky Allen of the Daily Mail. She is looking for someone in Scotland who only watches television in black and white (and only has a B&W licence) to feature in an article she is writing.

You can contact Vicky on 02036154736 if you would like participate.

I have also had a reporter around a few minutes ago from the Daily Mail but alas i also have colour.

Lets be honest the amount in daily use must be serioiusly low.Though there are 700 B/White licences. No comment!

This article claims there are 11,550 black and white licences:-

Presumably Scotland is included.

I was astonished to hear this on the news this morning. I think they said there was 11,000 black and white licences. but I may have misheard this. However even if there is when was the last time any one saw a black and white TV for sale? For me it has to be at least 10 years ago or more and it was those small 5-6" screen battery mains sets.
Unless of course there are a number of large screen mono sets dating back to the 1970's and early 1980;s which have been running without any attention for all these years.

Does a colour set displaying as mono qualify?

If you live in Scotland and only have a B&W licence then perhaps so!

Could these be people who are totally colour blind and thus don't see why they should pay for content that they cannot perceive?

Or possibly blind people who still have to buy a licence at a reduced fee.

Think I was quoted today by the reporter, 700 licences in Scotland. He was very disappointed that I use colour as well.

Or skinflint uncles who would rather spend the money on alcohol!

I have around 40 mono sets, two of which are watched regularly, but I also have colour sets as well.
Seeing that there is little worth watching, I was thinking of going B&W only, but you still need a colour licence for a PVR, also I do repair colour sets from time to time, so I will have to keep paying £145.50 a year

Possible fame but no fortune! Unless a big story breaks before 10pm it should go out on News at Ten. Features my Ekco TC196 I have been using in my living room since I brought it back to life. [see thread] Crew just left. Quick edit and let's hope it makes it! John.

I only recently uprated to colour for the first time. It has taken 7 weeks to get the refund. I ran my Hitachi via an RF modulator. It was still working well when sold to a forum member.
Needless to say, I now have an old Pye analogue set 14" which I was given - works perfectly! Shame about the cricket downunder.

Yes I was also surprised at that Hamish. There were rumours that around 700 Scots were hundled around their Pye V4's awaiting the transmissions to resume from Kirk O Shotts channel 3....I don't think anyone had the heart to inform them that they would have to buy a new telly..[Duck behind Handrian's Wall] Regards, John.

Gross exaggeration!

Should read: "There were rumours that around 700 Scots were hundled around their Pye V4 awaiting the transmissions to resume from Kirk O Shotts channel 3.."

When I worked for Visionhire back in the early 80s, They had several customers watching B&W TVs. When they got expensive to replace, we shorted the 4.43mHz crystal to disable the colour. One customer got taken to court but on producing a letter from us, the case was thrown out. Another only watched videos so we disabled the tuner. She lost her case because when challenged, she offered to pay.
