Can't remember name of our earliest mono TV
Before we got a colour tv ( Dual standard Baird M708 in 1967 ) we had a mono tv with a screen of at least 17". It must have been dual standard 405/625.
All I can remember is that the channel selector buttons were square with hexagonal inserts. You had a small plastic 'thimble' that adjusted the tuning. See attached drawing. I'd love to know what it was. My father was loaned it by the BBC as he worked there. This was about 1964 to 1967. |

Thanks guys.
Just done a search and found an old V879C on ebay. It wasn't that set but the buttons are correct. Have attached photo of buttons but not the right set. Havn't found an image of a urphy 840 yet. |

Hi Doctor Hue(!)
Could it possibly be a Murphy V939U? (Picture attached.) Kind regards. From Mike.

Thanks Mike,
Its closer - not sure. I think it was on 4 spindly black legs. I'd be curious to know what an 840 looks like as mentioned by akuram1 |

Re: Can't remember name of our earliest mono TV
There is no 840 model as such, Akuram1 mentioned the 840 range.
The Murphy models with the buttons you described started with the V84x and ISTR ended with the V97x. Replace the x with a 9 for a 19" and 3 for 23" CRT sizes, also add U at the end if the set was factory fitted with a UHF tuner and C for a console cabinet. Only on the V84x was the UHF tuner optional and if not fitted the upper set of buttons for UHF were dummies. By far the most common models I encountered was the V849U which had a separate implosion protection glass (as in the picture of the the V879C) and the V929U which had a push through CRT with Fenbridge cap for protection. I don't think it was the 849U as it had black or dark brown buttons not white as shown here: http://www.freewebs.com/405tv/galleryno4.htm But might have been the V929U. It was probably a 19" model. Did they do them with black spindly legs ? |

Re: Can't remember name of our earliest mono TV
Following on from this thread , does anyone recognise this description ?
It was 1953, we watched the coronation in a darkened room , a roof aerial , 5 mins to warm up, 2 adjusting screws at the front for vertical and ? horizontal hold. I remember this because my Dad damaged the adjustment when the picture kept rolling up . Phillips comes to mind . I think it was bakelite and rather square, like a TV22. l also remember seeing a Test Match with Simpson batting for England , but that was later I think. |

Re: Can't remember name of our earliest mono TV
HMV 15 inch console, yes bought for the Coronation with an H aerial on the chimney, Holme Moss.
It seemed to go through Z77's a lot, mains derived EHT. Whether it was something causing them to fail or it was just that type of valve I don't know, I was too young to take the back off, perhaps a wise decision on my parents part. It was 'upgraded' with the addition of a Band Three adapter for ITA channel 9 Winter Hill. I think, but not sure, it was straight through for Band 1 and heterodyned the Channel 9 to channel 2, could be wrong on that though, Sterling Converter seems to come to mind. |
